pull the cel code. jump the wire behind the center console with a paperclip and count the blinks. 1 long blink = 10; 1 short blink = 1. Look up code, report back. Read FAQ for additional information regarding pulling the code.

your airbox not having the 2 clips is not going to trip a check engine light so its not that. it has to be something mechanical in the engine or transmission that is causing your check engine light.

post your code you pulled here and your cars symptoms and ill help you find a solution...

I am dealing with the same code. I am told that its probably the EGR valve when that is the case. Unfortunately, this valve is about $190 new. Search for a good write-up on replacing the valve.

Your CEL was probably triggered by the EGR system, the cat, or the O2 sensors due to the age and mileage of them
61 - Primary Oxygen Sensor - P0133 (slow response), P1149 (range/performance), P1163 (slow response), P1164, P1165 (range/performance)
code 63 - Secondary Oxygen Sensor - P0137 (low voltage), P0138 (high voltage), P0139 (slow response)
code 65 - Secondary Oxygen Sensor Heater (HO2S) - P0141 (circuit malfunction)
code 67 - Catalyst System - P0420 (efficiency below threshold)
the following are usually due to the EGR valve and/or EGR ports in the intake manifold
code 71 - Cylinder 1 - P0300 (random misfire), P0301 (misfire detected), P1300 (multiple misfire)
code 72 - Cylinder 2 - P0300 (random misfire), P0302 (misfire detected), P1300 (multiple misfire)
code 73 - Cylinder 3 - P0300 (random misfire), P0303 (misfire detected), P1300(multiple misfire)
code 74 - Cylinder 4 - P0300 (random misfire), P0304 (misfire detected), P1300 (multiple misfire)
code 80 PO401 = EGR flow insufficient

That's if youre assuming he has OBD-II. If he pulled the code according to the guide above, then he should have a code 12 on an OBD-I system.

Is it plugged in? You don't need it. It just recycles unburned fumes into the intake manifold. I've had mine blocked off forever with no ill effects

replace your spark plug and/or plug wire for that cylinder, or replace them all while your at it.
