charging problem...still

Okay so my battery wasnt holding a charge, so I immediately thought it was either the alternator or the battery. I changed both, and it still wouldnt keep a charge on the brand new battery. So then I checked my cables, and they were corroded with this powdery blue stuff, so I changed those.. its still not holding a charge!! the tach and sped cut out with the radio, windows are slow to roll up and down.

I tried removing the positive battery cable from the battery while the car was running and the car stayed on..

I dont have a multimeter so I cant tell whats going on..

What should I do?

So lets think about how the charging system of the car works. The battery is only there to start the car, after that, it's the alternator that supplies power to the electrical system. The alternator is spun by a belt, and is connected to the rest of the system via cables. You already replaced the battery and alternator, so that leaves the belt or cables. It'd be unlikely that your belt is so loose that you're not spinning the alternator pulley. That would be obvious by just looking at it. So that leaves you with the cables. Exactly which ones did you replace? Did you look at ALL of the power cables? They aren't just the ones connected to the battery. You also have to check the ones connected to your alternator, especially the grounds. If all of the cables are good and connected tightly & securely... Does the car not start in the morning, like the battery is dead? If that's the problem, you probably have a parasitic drain on your system. (an aftermarket component installed incorrectly, or a short in your wiring somewhere) Honestly, you need to get yourself a multimeter. They're cheap and easy to use, and without one you're working in the dark. (when it comes to electrical work)

Just a hint on how to clean the powdery gunk off the terminals/ cable ends; Use baking soda mixed with a little water into a paste. Use an old toothbrush (or someting similar) and clean the terminals and the cable ends thoroughly with the mixture and it will clean up nice. Give it another shot if you see it coming back in the future.

Nobody likes a gunky battery...

Or you could use Coke. (the soda) There's a lot of things actually. But you shouldn't let your terminals get to the point where there's a lot of visible build-up. Brush that crap off if you see it.
