Changing oil myself for the first time...

I just want some instructions/tips for doing it. Today I bought some 10w30 Mobil 1 synthetic and a new filter.

What tools do I need to do this? Tips?
Thanks a hell of lot in advance

I't not tough at all...the most routine maintenence that you can do. You'll need a floor jack, a pair of jack stands (or ramps for the front wheels) a wrench (I think it's a 19mm, but I could be wrong) for the drain plug, a torque wrench, something to catch the old oil in, and that's all that I can think of right now. Here's some tips, so it while the car is warm, but not hot. When you jack the car up (I use the eye on the underside in the front just behind the bumper cover, because it will not do damage to the car) and put it on the stands, make sure the car is stable on the stands. Make sure the stand bottoms are flat on the ground, not leaning to a side, and I like to shake the car to make sure it is stable on the stands. Then I lower the jack and I put jack it up on one side of the car for increased safety. There is a metal strip that sticks out behind the front wheel, it's about 4 or 5 inches long. Then just put the oil catching thing you are using under the drain bolt, makes sure it is a little towards the back of the car because the oil will come out like the water in a hose that comes out slowly, it will not drain straight down. Then loosen the drain plug, make sure you turn it the right way, or you'll strip the plug and/or the oil pan, which is BAD. Then after the oil has drained, take off the filter, I take mine off with my hands, make sure you kinda push the filter back on the stud while you are taking it off, this prevents oil from silling all over you. If it is on there really tight (like some oil changing places like to do) you may need an oil filter wrench to get it off. When the filter is completely de-threaded, quickly turn the threded side up, there is still oil in there that will spill on you if you don't. Then put the new filter on, put the drain plug back on, tighten it to the correct torque specs (I don't remember what the specs are off hand) and fill the oil up. I think our cars hold around 4.5 quarts, It'll say exactly how much on the airfilter box. That's all I can think of right now, if you guys have anything to add, go for it.
Ryan

by the way, if that sounds really over simplified, I didn't do it because I think you're dumb, I did it because I don't know if you have any experience at all with car maintenece, so I wrote it as if this was the first time you'd ever done any maintenence k? Anymore questions post up or IM me. cantdrive92 on AIM.

Thanks cantdrive55
Some was oversimplified but I can't hold that against you can I?
I have experience with doing work on the car, just never done oil on a car before.

oh yeah...you reminded me to lube the oil filter gasket when putting the new one on. Just take a little bit of the old oil and smear it on there, and make sure the old filter gasket comes off with the filter. If it doesn't you've gotta get it off, because the new filter will not seal right and that means leak.

Don't forget to buy a new drain plug washer too, the old one wil have been compressed slightly and will leak if it is re-used.

You willbe fine reusing the old washer. I've done well over 300 oil changes on Honda's. (I used to be an oil change ***** at the Honda dealer).

Well I did the oil change. And I reused the washer, it looked to be in good shape, no leakage so far. I used a decent filter. The FRAM toughgaurd. I'll probably use Honda OEM or Mobil 1 filters from now on.

Just keep an eye on that washer, you may be lucky, I wasn't so fortunate and neither was my driveway

My parents bought a 90 Accord right off the showroom floor back in 89, my dad has done every oil change, has NEVER changed the oil plug gasket, and that car hasn't leaked a drop of oil and it's got 190,000 miles on it, been through 4 drivers now.

Yeah the "regular" FRAM filter is dude. Those are the ones known to be complete ****. I read reviews and the toughguard is a "decent" filter, I didn't say "great" or "the best" did I? It is not as cheaply made and has the features of the top filters .
I made the best decision for what I could buy at the time. I won't be getting this one again, but this one is by no means a bad filter.
