Changing the oil...

Hey guys I have a 1993 Prelude VTEC with 161,000 miles on it. Yeah, I know it's a lot of miles and all but I only paid $4500 for it and I'm doing an engine swap later down the road so it doesn't really matter. But anyway I was wondering what would be the best recommened oil to use for my engine? How many quarts should I use? Is it hard to change the oil on preludes? I wanna do it myself so I have experience. I don't trust anyone else doing it. Anything else I am missing?

Stick with regular dino oil (conventional). With that mileage, which isn't that much by the way, I wouldn't switch to anything else.

Changing the oil is a breeze. Unscrew the drain plug and drain oil, then unscrew the filter. Replace the filter with a new one. Don't forget to lube the rubber ring of the new filter with a little fresh oil and screw it back on. Hand tighten the filter and fill with oil. Should take about 5.1 quarts of oil.

Dude thanks a lot. You have been a lot of help. Do you have an AOL Instant messanger handle or anything? Maybe we can chat about stuff. I am sorta new to my Prelude and need some recommendations and whatnot.

Everyone has their own preferences concerning oil and filters. Fellow member marcucci did a write-up on filters. Some were very bad and some were great. You may want to do a search to find that thread and read up on it. Type his name into the search function and "oil filter" as the keywords. If that doesn't work look on www.ntpog.org and you can find his write-up there.

As for oil. the Prelude manual says to use 5W-30. Some people like to use 5W-30 in the winter because it is thinner and can circulate quicker in very cold winters, then they use 10W-30 in the summer. I personally use 10W-30 year round for no particular reason. I always have and probably always will.

As for oil brand, the oil of choice is Mobil, but Valvoline is very good also. That's what I happen to use when I change my oil myself.

Every 90+ Honda uses the same oil filter, I like Purolator Pureone. Stay away from Fram and any filter with an addative (like teflon.) Any name brand 10W-30 is fine. In fact, if you do your research many generic oils are really name brand in a different bottle (I think Walgreens house brand is Quaker State oil.) BTW, you will need to put the front of the car on jack stands. Getting to the filter is kinda hard, it's above and forward of the catalytic converter.

I have a 2 ton car jack. Where is it that I put the jack to raise it? I don't want to damage anything.

The owner's manual should show you where the jack points are. Basically there's a "U" up front in the middle maybe 8 inches back.

Amen to that! Don't get under a car that is only up on a floor jack. I like to use ramps myself when doing anything that they won't get in the way of (like tire rotations or brake work).

Okay, I changed the oil and everything is all good

How many miles should I let it go to until I do the next oil change?

like 2500 or 3000?

Everyone says 3000 but the manual says 7500. I change mine every 5000.

If you drive 20,000 miles a year 5k is fine. I would do a minimum of 3 oil changes per year.

study says that there's no diff between a motor that change oil every 3k miles and every 7.5k miles, i change mine every 3k is because i use syn. oil and they are thinner

IMO you should use some high-milege oil, Castrol is my recommadation on this one

just check w/ your local dealer for the price of oil filters, i always get good deal on them from the dealer, either like buy 4 get 1 free or package deal, IMO oem filter fits the best

but like Mark says, it's all about personal preference
