Changing 5 speed trans oil, and what kind do all of you have in there?
I haven't had experience with changing a manul transmissions oil yet. I think I have it figured out, but I would like someone to help confirm that this is the correct process.
1.) Remove the drain plug, let the old oil dump out into a container for a while till it stops dripping.
2.) Clean off the drain plug (if there is a magnet on it for metal particles.)
3.) Tighten the drain plug back into place.
4.) With the car level? Remove the fill plug, and put new 10-30 or 10-40 synthetic oil in there, until it reaches the fill plug height.
5.) Stop at that height, and tighten the Fill plug back into place.
6.) Dispose of used transmission oil properly.
Would this be the correct way to go about changing the oil in my Manual transmission?
Is there a predetermined amount of oil that should go in there, or do I just fill it to the fill plug like I suggested above?
Also what oil are you guys using in there, or what lubricant?
Thanks in advance for any replies, I need to get this done tomorrow while I'm changing my oil.
Make sure you can get the fill plug loose before you go removing the drain plug... just to be sure. Also make sure your car is level. Other than that, sounded about right to me. I use Honda MTF.

sounds right to me. i have used gm synchromesh from 30,000-130,000. just switched to pennzoil synchromesh. much chepaer, seems to be a little better in the cold.
Alright, I asked my buddy at honda parts dept. what is in the MTF they make. He says he belives It's a glorified motor oil, with additives such as sulfer like gear oil might have.
I'm just going to go with 2 quarts of non synthetic 10W-30 Motor oil for now, I need to get it done it's driving me crazy.

brett, just remember that if you're using regular motor oil in the tranny, it will need to be changed out just like motor oil in the engine. Every 3k miles (you may be able to push it further ast risk of damaging your transmission). There is a reason that Honda MTF is GLORIFIED motor oil. You don't have to change it for the next 50k miles.

Ive also been wondering how to change this and wanted to do it. isnt there also a filter in there that you can replace?
is it really that simple to replace transmission fluid? for some reason, i thought it would be a real pain but it sounds like a simple oil change.
how many quarts of mtf should i buy? ide love to get my hands on a mobil synthetic version but i do love oem honda stuff too. but nothing but mobil synthetic goes in my engine, maybe i should do the same for my transmission.
let me know how it went for you when you do change it because ide really like to change mine too.
i decided to take a look at my helms manual it actually seems really really painless. super simple stuff! im def going to replace my transmission fluid next oil change. here is the scan of the page from my book for ya. and lucky for you, i also have a 95 so this is relevant to all 95's. and if you dont already have a helms, go buy one now!
now i just have to decide which fluid to replace it with.
Anybody have a price on this MTF honda fluid? I'll put that in next time I do my fill... no problem changing it out.
Honda recomended just 10-30 or 10-40 regular motor oil for 30,000 mile intervals i think, until just recently.
regardless, ill pay the $$ to get the honda fluid, im sure they know how to make their products last for ever.
It's about $6 a quart, and you'll need two quarts. Buy it, because Honda makes this stuff specifically for transmissions. How could you say no?
The pain-in-the-ass part is getting to the fill plug. Take out the fill plug BEFORE you drain the fluid so you know you can put new fluid in. To get the new fluid in, you'll either need a really long hose connected to a funnel (like 2 feet long) and pour it in from the top, or get a pump (at Kragen, $6) that fits onto a quart bottle and pumps all the oil upward into the tranny. Worked for me.

i use Redline in mines!!! works great but it will run you $10 a bottle... Honda MTF is good as well... cost $3-5 a bottle... I seem to like the Redline better and i also heard the GM Sycromesh Friction Modified is another good one
Redline is more controversial. From what I've read on Internet forums, it feels like heaven for about a month and then you have to replace it.
GM Synchromesh is good only if there's something wrong with your tranny and you're trying to mask it because that's the only hope short of a rebuild.
MTF keeps a happy tranny happy.
