CEL code 12

Ok I have been getting a CEL every once in a while for about the past month or so... FINALLY i got my HELMS manual over XMas from my GF..

Anyway.. got code 12 CEL.. looking in the helms it tells me it has something to do with me EGR system.. now It runs through a flow chart of things to do.. things like check vacuum and whatnot.. My question is.. besides an interminetn CEL is this harmful to the car... Also how much is a new EGR valve.. since I don;t have the way to test things out like the HELMS asks me too.. I figured if it was a cheap part I would just replace it...

Also.. In this flow chart is says REPLACE EGR valve.. is there someplace in the HELMS that gives good directions on how to do this.. or is it pretty straight forward???? THis thing NEEDS an index.. It says it is a first edition service manual JUST for the 94 lude.. pretty cool.. BUT I really thought that it would give more step by step type directions for doing various tasks.. but I am new to the monkey-wrenching world.. I'll find my way!

start by replacing all your vacuum hoses from the erg valve. see if that fixes anything. that will cost you a total of 3 bucks for the hosing you need. that was my problem
