Sometimes when I'm at a stop and I'm in neutral and when its time to go I can't put it into first gear. WTF. I mean I would either have to put it in second and then quickly back in first or at times I would have to let go of the clutch and start all over. Sometimes, I get so pissed and I jam it in. Is this bad for the tranny? I mean I don't grind going into first but its hard to get it into it sometimes.
This doesn't matter on how long I have stopped for it occurs when evers. I get it at least 2-4 times a day. Anybody know what's the deal and if there's anything to correct this?
It's a 93 VTEC with 82000 with the original clutch. The clutch still grabs very easily so I don't think I need a new clutch.
It's normal with the Prelude tranny, we all go through the same thing.
There is a safety device which limits us from shifting into first gear while moving. Sometimes the gears don't clear even though we are at a full stop. Just keep doing what you are doing and don't worry about it. Shifting into 2nd quickly realligns the gears and allows for the shift into first.
Nothing to worry about but it is somewhat annoying when the light turns green and you can't take off right away.
hey make sure you dont have a leak on your clutch master and slave cylinders.. i had this problem and i couldnt get the car to move.. i had to have it towed to my mechanic.. just have it checked.

No this is something that happens sporadically and has been happening since I've owned the car - almost three years.
The gears just aren't alligning correctly and needs to be put into 2nd to clear them.
If it was a leak in the slave or master it wouldn't have lasted three years without me needing a tow.
Well if ur clutch master cylinder or slave cylinder is leaking, you wouldn't even be able to put it in any gear. I know this cuz i went through this. The way i handled with that was to turn off the car and then put it in 2nd gear and drive to the shop just in 2nd... sucked but it worked. Your synchros are probably going bad. Honda trannies just plain suck that's all. I had the same prob, i ended up re-building my whole tranny...

Ummm really? is that what Stephen Papadakis used a stock prelude tranny?
Everybody's trannies suck...All you have to do is ask any brand of car's owners, and they'll tell you, "such and such's trannies suck."
It's all good...

Glad that this is not just me. Mark94, you're absolutely right, gets hella annoying when light is green and you can't put it in gear. Makes you look like a rookie driver that stalled from behind.
DO NOT JAM IT IN! I know you're pissed; but that was my $2,400 mistake! Just don't do it! Shops alone will charge you 500 bucks to just open the tranny to take a look at it if you ruin it; and doing that will ruin it.. I know first hand. I used to force the shifter into first, but that is so bad for it, it can really damage parts in your transmission!
It sound like the syncro on first is going/is bad.
Dont jam it into gear, it will only make it worse...
By shifting into 2nd, then back to first, you are aligning the gear set to the pinion gear(shifter). Try double clutching into first, that should help.
