For those of you who really really really want to put an s2000 steering wheel on your 4th gen, I am here to tell you that it can be done. Don't worry, I don't weld, I only piece things together with Honda parts. Due to my extremely slow internet connection, and my own personal shortage of time, there won't be any pics or extended intstructions on how to do this.
In short, though, what I bought is:
5th gen steering column (this will require some slight modification)
S2000 steering wheel
S2000 cable reel
S2000 combination switch
If you want to make it easier, you can get the combination switch and cable reel from a 5th gen prelude (I think)
In any case, I simply removed my 4th gen steering column, and put the 5th gen in. You will have to use some common sense to get this to fit. You'll need to take a close look at the splines and compare them to your 4th gen splines and then take a dremel to it. The fifth gen column is also a touch shorter, so you need to modify the mounting tabs.
As far as the combination switch, if you use 5th gen parts, the wiring shouldn't be too bad. As a matter of fact, I think I would recommend it. I am in the middle of a wiring nightmare to retrofit the S2000 combination switch in.
Finally, I have not figured out how to mount any steering column cover yet. Oh yeah, you need to modify your existing ignition switch (I'll let you figure out how to do that for now)
Basically, I have had this project in my head for almost a year now, and I've finally gotten around to it. I am now 100% sure that the physical hardware will work. Now I'm just trying to get all the small details worked out. If you have any questions, I am not online frequently anymore (due to dial up service) so if you absolutely need something answered, email me at jsides@vt.edu
As unspecific as this post is, I hope it gives some of you hope for putting in your dream steering wheels.
Ugh, ok, I guess I'll see what I can do tomorrow. Not only do I have to battle with a slow connection, but I gotta figure out how to put pics on here again. It's been so long I think I've forgotten....hehe
For all of you who are desperate to see pics, I hope these work for you. The picture of the wiring harness is the same wiring harness you can find in your cars for the combination switch, but it has two extra harnesses on it for the s2000 combination switch. In order to get the s2000 combo switch to work, you need to add a relay. I don't have an airbag yet ( too expensive for me right now) and as I said before, I haven't figured out what I'm going to do about the column cover. Hope this helps for now.
I wouldn't hold my breath for a write up... I have very limited time to do one, and it has been my experience that things always get left out in one. Due to the extremely sensitive nature of air bags, and all the liabilities that may ensue, not to mention you're messing with the steering system, I'd just as soon not put a how to guide out for this. If you do choose to perform this upgrade, I'd be more than happy to answer specific questions. My final word on this is...... If you don't feel comfortable enough to try something on your own w/o any guidance, I would not suggest embarking on this modification on your own.
To answer a previous question, I don't have too much money tied up in this project right now. I was able to get a steering column for about 20 bucks after hunting one down on ebay for a number of months. The steering wheel, combination switch, and cable reel I got for about 50 (again with a long search on ebay) I don' t have the airbag yet, and that's going to be the expensive part of this deal. I also am going to buy column covers from an S2000 and a 5th gen prelude to see if I can get them to fit. Otherwise, it's gonna be a custom job.
Again, good luck to anyone who wants to persue this project. It took me about 8 hours of wiring diagram time, and about 15 hours of install time. Basically, it's not an afternoon project.
Hey bud, sorry I was away from the computer yesterday and accidentally left AIM on. Glad you finally got this done, still have your bumper bar? Hehe, anyway, to what degree did you have to modify the end splines on your 4th gen column? The rest of it, while time consuming, sounds fairly doable, the only part that caught my eye was modifying the splines.
On a side note, that wheel looks very nice in our interior.
I know this is a thread from so long ago its rediculious. but its a pertinent subject and I'm curious if anyone else has attempted this and done so sucessfully.
A lot has changed in 5 years and wondering if anyone has anything to add to the subject?
No other than it can be done with a 4th gen steering column, you just have to gut it and modify it.
There is a local person that will do it. Is it worth it? I don't think so, i would rather just put another steering wheel in. But it's your car and money.

If you want a nice OEM wheel go with the ITR, it fits. I was also thinking of calling HMO to see if the holes on the CL1 Euro R wheel are the same as the ITR for those who don't want a red H.
