After trying to order an STR cam seal for my ride (my stock one is leaking a bit on the bottom of the seal), I heard a few people at the shop I go to say that it's "normal" for the cam seal to be leaking a bit ... that it's simply "blow-by". Can anybody (MachineHead, Dr. James, etc) tell me if this "blow-by" is true? Is it common for the cam seal to leak on our cars?

Very common for the stock gasket to eventually leak as the miles get higher.
yes it is very common..but not something you should take lying down...the longer you wait the worse it will get. Just replace the unit w/ the STR model. The factory unit will leak again if you replace it
Whatever shop told you that is full of the stinky stuff. That seal is there for a reason, to seal the end of the cam with the head, and valve cover. As well as to prevent the leakage of oil. The stock Honda unit is a P.O.S. They get hard and brittle as the miles go up. I have seen them leak as soon as 7500 miles, On relativly new cars. Just order the STR unit, replace it and forget it. The cam gear side seals will leak as well. But there are no better replacements that I have found. If those are leaking have them replaced with the timing belt. Blow by... That's pretty funny stuff.

Good to know.
Does anyone else make one other than STR? Or it is one of those "we have the monopoly on this part" parts?
What's up?! Last question on the issue, hopefully ... how difficult is the install? Is it pretty labor/time intensive? How long should it take a qualified mechanic to do (I'm not one of them)? Should I have anything else done to the engine, in terms of preventative maint., while the seal is being replaced? Thanks!!!!
