Hey guys,
2 days ago my car started making this "flat tire" sound, this rubbing sound. I got out, checked my tires and they were doing just fine. Just bought some Kumho ASX's last week, so I didn't expect the tires to be flat. I noticed it was only the rear passenger side too. I started to notice that the sound really only happened when I was hitting on the brakes...and got noticeably louder when coming to a full stop. Talked to my buddy and he said it's most likely my calipers being shot, meaning that they need to be replaced because they're scratching up my rotors. I'm not exactly sure what he meant by it, but I do know that rotors and calipers are pretty expensive, and even more so to get them installed. Anyone know if this is a common problem, where I can find affordable parts, and if it's most likely the calipers?
I just spent 400 bucks on new tires--I'd really hate to spend another 300-400 fixing this...
well, most likely it is your brake pads worn down too far...metal on metal grinding sound. You can just replace the brake pads - thats what I did before. Make sure you take out and grease the pins that hold the caliper in the bracket - my calipers seized before and I had to do this. If you could provide some more information, that would be mutually beneficial
Saw the damage myself, but here's the exact estimate of the damage:
My car needs
Front- New rotors, calipers, and brake pads.CV axels (could wait on the axels though)
Rear - New rotors, calipers, and Brake pads.
They said, all 4 pads were worn down way too much. The rotors were rusted beyond to where they could be machined...and the CV axels in the front were leaking? Also, the rear calipers were seizing into the rotors...
Bottom line:
Labor: 437.75
Parts 1,103.51.
Total with taxes and fees: 1,645.
LOOOOOL
I'm a college student with school loans up my ass, and recently needed new tires, which costed a little over 400 dollars.
I did notice that they're estimating over 230 for the calipers, when I've seen some direct replacement calipers online for 100-150. Also, the rotors at midas were 128.
Now, there is NO way I'm spending another 1,600 on my car, putting me at 2,000 for tires and a new brake system. I mean, DAMNN 1,600??
Anyways, my brothers friend can install them in 3-4 hours and charge me 50 bucks an hour for labor...so maybe a good 200 for labor.
So my question is, where can I find good, affordable, rotors and calipers online?
rotors from nopionline.com are $25-$30 each. the pads are about $50/set if you get Nissin OEM replacements. you may be able to grease up your calipers and not replace them - thats what I did with mine. Where are you located?

they're saying your front calipers are shot as well? wtf?
i kinda doubt all 4 calipers are screwed. might want to get a second opinion. pads and rotors are very easy to do yourself. calipers are not too bad either. i had to replace my rear pass. caliper (actually chris aka dohcpower v.2 did it). my rear wheel was getting hot, a lot of brake dust compared to the other wheels and the pad was almost burnt looking.
when I replaced my rotors/pads it was around $100 for front and $100 for back, thats Nissin OE pads and brembo blanks. Not that bad when you compare it to a shop's price, but then again I did the labor.
you said you would hate spending another $300, but I think it's going to be about $300, but way better than the midas peoples
