A/C re-charge

Hey guys,
So, for the longest time I have been putting off getting my AC fixed, seeing as how we be barely get a month or two of good sun in Vancouver, BC. and that it just rains the rest of the year. This year though, I'll be making 50 minute trips each way daily in what seems like is going to be a really hot summer. so I thought I'd finally get it done.

I've looked around the site a bit and learned that I need R12 to re-charge. My compressor works I think, because I can hear it when i hit the AC button...but no cold air. spoke to my shop and the guy was saying that they do not have r12 anymore?? he said something along the lines of 'my car being too old' and that 'i would have to find an independent mechanic' who may have one with the machine. strange.

thoughts or ideas? and is this true that r12 is no longer available?

you can buy a do it yourself retrofit kit from the store. I'm not sure what retailers you have up there, but walmart should have it - and it shouldnt be too expensive.

im just curious - what is a hot summer like up there?

I was thinking about the retrofit, but to be honest i'm not all that mechanically inclined. there really is no r12 to be found anymore and it has be to be r134?

haha, nothing much really. i think record highs have been around 30 C, but this year it has been higher. not bad, but no fun sitting in traffic with no AC or a fan that blows hot air.

** Oh, I just read somewhere that 4th gens 1993 and up no longer used r12? that it was only up to 92? gah! dunno...mine is a 93 S

Yea you can get r12, but its horribly expensive because of the EPA. you are going to need to take it to a shop the first time anyways cause they have to suck all the r12 out before that can change it to r134a. Have them change it and run a leak test if you want.

I went to a shop recently and got it figured out that the car does indeed have R134.
He wanted to 100 for the labour, and 30 per pound for the gas?? and another 100 to check for leaks :S
gonna look around some more, cuz I keep reading on here that it shouldn't be much more than 100-150.
Thanks for all your help though, appreciated.
