Buying a used engine

I am thinking about buying a JDM engine from a private party, the person selling it advised me that he did a leak down test and looks good and offered to repeat the test when I go to get the engine but how can I tell if it is JDM or someone selling a USDM engine and what other test can I do to spot problems

If the seller isn't offering any kind of start up guarantee, just forget it.

Look at the engine code stamped on the block, that will tell you if the engine is JDM, USDM, or whatever else. You might also want to check out the tranny code. Kronn has posted charts for both codes, just search for them.

leak down and compression test (make sure it's done correctly).
