bumper piece question

i was just bored and i was lookin at my bumper and i noticed this piece and im wondering what its for. im thinkin about cutting the center grill so this piece would get in the way. look at this pic.

look at the passenger side turn signal and then look to the right of it. its right on the side of the turn signal. its a piece thats flat. its a piece thats not on the other side. im just wondering what the hell that piece is for. whats the point of it? cuz i think i would need to cut it in order to cut my center grill.

I can, of course

It's to protect the AC parts that are behind it. I personally cut mine out because it evens up the bumper, but it comes on ALL 4th gens, you just never really notice it.

I just noticed that last week... thought it had something to do with my new bumper cover, but I guess I know what it is now.

There's some a/c lines behind that plastic piece as well as the a/c dryer.

You can see it a bit better here:

Thats an AC line cover. As mentioned above.
If you cut it off, what is going to protect your AC lines from pebbles/rocks? Are you mounting some sort of mesh grill cover?
And what do you mean you are cutting off your "middle grill" - the bar between the 2 bumper openings? (directly in front of the radiator/ACdryer)
OR The little pedestals that hold each of those together?
