Bumper Falling Off -- Please Help! :)

Hi All,

We had our wonderful '93 Prelude Si repainted a few years ago, and now the rear bumper squeaks like crazy when you hit a bump. When you shake it by hand, it's really loose and squeaky. It moves maybe an inch up and down, while the rest of the car just sits there.

I'm thinking that the body shop had to remove it (there was a big scratch on it) and didn't replace it very well. We're about 500 miles away from them now, so looks like I'm on my own.

Any suggestions for fixing this problem? I'm good with fixing things like this, so I know I can do it. I just wonder if there is anything to look out for before digging in. It's really a big piece of the car!

Do I need to unplug the running lights first?
Do the taillights need to come out?
Are there some tricky nuts or screws that are hard to find or get at?
Any way to tighten everything up to prevent the movement and squeaking?

Etc., anything will help at this point. I plan to dig in tomorrow.

Thanks so much!

pull your trunk carpet up and you will see the nuts that hold it on.

Just to tell you all the end of the story...there were NO NUTS holding the bumper on! The paint shop put the bumper back on, but forgot to put the 4 nuts across the back of the trunk to hold the bumper in place.

Sheesh! Lucky it didn't actually fall off after all. I guess just the 2 screws at the front of the bumper were holding it on.

Cheers,

Fred

Yeah, just those two screws holding it on. Well, the reason I never did anything about it is that it's my wife's car and she has a lot of junk in the trunk. Everytime I'd hit a bump, the trunk would make a racket -- I thought it was all that junk!

It's fixed now, but there are still noises when I hit a good solid bump. But now I'm figuring that's the actual shock or something in the suspension, because it is clearly from one side or the other, depending on which side hits.

I seem to remember the car always made a "ping" sound from the rear stock towers when I hit a bump -- McPherson struts?

Cheers,

Fred
