Build quality of KYB AGX

I finnished installing my KYB's and HR springs last but I have to say.....Im really not impressed with the build quality of the KYB's. For one thing as I was finnishing up the last shock I noticed as I was tightening the bolt at the top, the whole shaft would spin on itself making it impossible to tighten adequately. Normally on the stock shock you stick an allen key in there and hold while you tighten the bolt with a wrench. In the case of the KYB I had to jam something in there in order to tighten. What PITA!!!. Now I think the adjustibility of that shock might be messed up.

I used a 14mm and an 8mm open ended wrench yesterday to grease up that loud ash bushing at the top of the strut, so I had to take off the nut holding it down, the trick is just using some pliers at the last few threads becuase it will spin.

they're fine - just have to use pliers or similar like Corey said.

I had no problem getting the nut on the top. I do think they should have designed it another way so you could get the nut on easier. Since the nut is the kind that has teflon threads in it so it tights down as you turn.

You may have just toasted the adjustablity of them!!!

You are supposed to use an 8mm open end wrench on the flat spots on the top of the strut rod to hold it in place while you tighten the nut. If you jamed something down the adjustment hole in the top you prolly f'ed up the adjuster and have a non adjustable shock now

I'm going to second exactly what Jason said. There is a grooved spot to hold the shaft from spinning. I got mine torqued to spec without any problems.

^^ Yup yup, I agree.. It even says in the documentation for installing to NOT turn the entire rod or it may damage the shock!!

The top piece is threaded all the way down to tighten to OEM tq spec but you'll notice the threads are shaved off on adjacent sides in paralell .. put an 8mm wrench on it to hold her steady and a 14mm for the bolt and crank it down.

For best results, do this outside of the car before you put them on, not much space to work on with lil wrenches when its in the car and those fraction turns suck and are time consuming.

On the note of the KYB when I first installed them I tried a few settings that other people said were best ... now in winter I have them set at #1 with H&R sport springs and they ride really nice.. a tiny bit rougher than stock and uber bouncey.. they give lots of body roll when turning fast (60+) ... #2 is good for a bit more handling but the ride quality suffers dramatically ..

hit the mountain highways on #3 and oooh yea .. its great.

im glad that all of you like your kyb stuff. i personally hate the day i ever bought mine. i put on eibach pro-kit and kyb agx about a year or so ago. i love how i can adjust them from rough to really rough. i also like the custom squeak noise that they now make. anyone want a set of kyb agx shocks and struts for a 4th gen?

nah, I was careful not to jam it too far down but enough to keep the shaft from spinning while I was tightening. What I am afraid off is that before I realized a solution to my problem....I spun the shaft around many times while torqueing the bolt. Would this damage the shock?

On a side note it was the only one of the three that spun like that while torqueing so I though it was defective.

I set mine to 3 of front and 4 in the rear.......I say why not!

1 is the softest setting. It goes easier over bumps but bounces a lot. I HATE bouncing Thats why I have mine set to 3, bumps are pretty harsh but no bouncing afterwards. I like 2 as well. Have yet to try 4, will probably save that for the NPM!

I might change mine to 1 in front and 2 in the rear, for winter. We just got dumped with about a foot of snow!

Ya I think they get a little stiffer in the cold anyway, but I'd recommend 2 - 1 is just makes me sea sick on an uneven road. I was going to put them back to 2 for the winter but it suddenly got too cold to tear out the trunk lining again lol. In the spring I'm going to cut out the lining surrounding the shock tower top so i'll have quick and easy access.

thank you guys. we have a highway here in KS (I-35) that is bumpy, like waves...it can litterally make you sick. I have mine on 1 (like i said) and I honestly think my car will just take off b/c of the bumping...lol

No problem with the build quality with my set at all. The only problem seems to be people installing them with out the proper tools.
