brake question....

last night i started hearing this noise, it's almost like a knocking that happens once everytime the wheel turns around. I just swapped in the VTEC brakes. I didn't have this with the Si brakes and I haven't done any heavy braking with the VTEC brakes. They have been on for maybe 150 miles. Any ideas? I did a quick check last night and couldnt find anything. I didn't know if maybe something was loose or if the pads were just sliding around. Any ideas?

Check the brackets holding the brackets and calipers, sounds like one is loose. Limit your driving until you check this out!!

I had the same thing happen to me and eventually my bolt came out while driving. I was the lower bracket bolt so it wasn't as bad as it could have been...

I just checked and they seem to be tight. I don't know if it happens all the time, but it's very noticeable right before I stop (and louder). I don't have to drive much before the weekend. Just maybe 5 miles around here. I just went on a ride and the brakes work great, just that damned knocking. just started last night I'll look at them again later if I get a chance - people look at me funny in the parking lot taking apart the car.

Any other ideas? That sounds good, I'll check again later. It just seemed okay when I checked it....

okay, i went back outside and took off the caliper, pads, and loosened the bracket enough to move it, then i tightened it all back up. sometimes i think i hear the noise, but it's definately not what it was before. I did it to the passenger side (what I thought) and my gf says she heard it from the driver side, sooo....ill cbeck it later when the brakes cool off

you can tighent them without taking the wheel off if you crawl under the car.

also i put anti-seiz on them make sit so much nicer when you do your next brak job.

also make sure you greased the pistons that the caliper bolts too.

did you do a break job our put on used pads/rotors you maywhant to change the pads and resurface the disks if you didnt

did you have to use new brackets for the swap?
oh and you don't HAVE to use backing plates for the brake pads.
AND did you remove the heat shield or just bend it back? you might have bent it too far out and that's hitting when you're turning. i say remove it, you're not going to drive through an ice cold puddle on a track when your brakes are super hot anyways.

Jay, you know we get icy roads all the time down here. I bent it back, I checked it again today and it seems like it's back far enough, but not too far. If "new brackets" mean your dirty whored up brackets then yes. The Si brackets aren't big enough to hold the bigger VTEC pads, plus I don't think they would clear the rotor since it's ~1" bigger. I took off both sides and put everything back on. The driver side was slightly looser, but the bracket was tight on there. The caliper bolts weren't too tight though. I went for a drive and it feels okay and I don't hear anything loud like before, so I hope it's okay. I'll update later. The one thing I noticed is that the brakes aren't that better when you are going slow. You really notice more braking power when you are going ~40 and start to slow down. I'll take some pics when I wash the car - that will be this weekend if it doesn't rain.

Any other Si vs VTEC questions?

Jay - the brakes work great so far. I had a small leak problem at first, but I don't think I tightened up the fitting enough. I just used my brake lines and connected them to the new calipers. it seemed easier that way. The bleeder screw that I thought was screwed seems to be fine as well. I was afraid there would be problems since they had been sitting for so long.

uhm, just doing a brake job you should notice the brakes are better
are you SURE you bled the **** out of them? you may have a little bit of air in the caliper... oh and you installed them so the bleeder is on the top, right? you can have them opposite =p

On the wheel thats making noise jack the car car up take the wheel off and spin the rotor with with your hand. See if you hear any noise.
When you're driving the does the knocking sound stop when you step on the brake?

^^ i want him to let his g/f or whatever was driving the car drive it around the parking lot and him run along trying to find the noise... as she hits the brakes and turns.

I also want video of the above.

I think the sound is gone and I am not drunk enough to run along the side of the car, plus we need travis to narrate the video and he isn't here. yes, the bleeder is in the top. what do you mean by bleed the crap out of them? I let my brothers step on the pedal and i did the hard part at the calipers. i bled them and did it several times when no air was coming through. and even did it again just to make sure.

bleed the f out of them... meaning bleed until your brothers foot hurts. have him pump the crap out of him 20 seconds, stand on it, then let it bleed until the pedal goes 1/2 way down, tighten the bleeder... repeat.
sometimes it's hard to find someone that'll actually tell you when it's close to the floor and NOT on the floor
