Brake Light

Hi folks,

I got a new one for you. When I take a hard left (and only a left), my brake light comes on. It is not the ABS light, but the Ebrake light, and it stays on for a second or two.

It's not the handle flying up. I already narrowed that down.

What do you think? Has anybody run into this one before?

I'd bet a loose wire on the ebrake assembly or something that's bent closing the connection.

I'm curious because I've taped the ebrake handle down and it doesn't seem to solve the problem.

I'll check the wire, but most of it is a beast to get at.

Any thoughts on a ABS sensor gone awry?

An ABS sensor should have nothing to do with the ebrake light. Take off the center console around the ebrake and check the wire that's clipped to the ebrake assembly.

Could the BRAKE light also be a warning light for the regular brake system, meaning all 4 disk brakes and the master cylinder? Might check out your brake fluid level...it could be sloshing around in there during turns and be low enough to trip a sensor for the light. Sorry if I'm wrong, I don't know 4th gens that well.

Ding ding ding! You should check the brake fluid before tearing up your console

Why would low brake fluid throw an ebrake light? The ebrake light is simply a wire connected to the ebrake assembly to sense whether it is up or down. If there's low brake fluid, I would think the ABS light would turn on.

The 'Brake' light turns on when there's low brake fluid AND when the e-brake is up. The brake fluid reservoir cap has a sensor that causes the light to come on when brake fluid is low.

Ahh..well, in that case: check your fluid before pulling the console up!

Bingo. The brake fluid was the culprit. That little float sensor sits off-center, which explained my left-turn-only issues. Identified and fixed, but I unfortunately have bigger issues right now. Somebody hit my car on the side of the road the other night. Oh well, back to the drawing board.

Thanks to all. Well diagnosed.
