Brake and ABS light

So I get in the car the other morning after finding what peice I needed for my car (new shifter stay cable broke), and I start driving i notice before i go anywhere that the BRAKE light wont go out but its not engaged!!! I think mmm ok well I'll have to look at it later. Then 2 minutes down the road the ABS light lights up.

Causes? Ideas?

Thanks again PO mofia!

Brake light usually signals that the e-brake is on. I know you said it's not engaged, but that is the obvious thing to check. It can also mean that you are low on brake fluid. As for the ABS light, it comes on anytime the brake light is on for more than set time. The ABS shuts itself down if anything is wrong with the brakes, hence the ABS light.

^I believe it's 30 seconds or so that the ABS shuts down.

Like he said, make sure the ebrake is all the way down, and check your fluid.

The dash Brake light has two purposes. 1) to let you know if you're parking brake is engaged and 2) to show that there is a change in pressure in the brake system. Sometimes the dual proportioning valve piston can become out of place. Either jab your brakes to try and move it back, or tap the valve itself a couple times. If its not that it could just be a leak in the system.

Hopefully you can see this picture since it requires a user/pass to initially view the site.

Also, theres an ABS diagnostic plug behind the radio next to the CEL diag. plug. Try and retrieve the ABS code its throwing out and I'll look it up.

if your brake and abs light come up often outta nowhere, then check your brake fluid levels, i had the same problems, turns out i was runnin low on all fluids, just topped everything, and thats the last i seen of those lights comin on and off. That fixed it.

My abs light is always on, brake fluid is fine and the e-brake is not engaged but it always turns on after about 30 seconds after the car is in motion. It wont turn on just sitting still, running or not, nothing is leaking either. but i can always hear the realay switch under the dash when the light comes on. im confused. i have had it tested and they said each time they reset it it gave them a different eror. what could my problem be?

You do know there is a separate resevoir for the ABS right? It usually doesn't need additional fluid, but it doesn't hurt to check.

Also: Since your fluid was low, I would HIGHLY recommend checking out your break pads to make sure you've got some left. You shouldn't be losing fluid, and when the pads wear, it takes more fluid to fill the brake lines/calipers since the pads are further out. Low fluid could indicate pads that need to be replaced.

yes i do and they are both full, however my rear pads are low though i dont think thats the problem becuase they werent low when the problem started and ive had three different mechanics look at the ABS trin to figure it out.

did u check the abs fuse ? i doubt that ll be it, but still check it, its in the fused box under the hood. if thats not it, and your fluids are good, then its probly a relay or a switch somewhere. I saw something like that on pimp my ride, hehe where the damn wiper would go on everything the guys honked the horn. MAD MIKE IS TRULLY MAD !!! hehe

Could be a million things... Wheels sensors, fluid levels, ABS modulator, VSS the list goes on...

Can you get any codes for us to work with?
