Best way to pick an exhaust, without hearing it first
I am ready to purchase an exhaust, but I have nothing to help me in my decision except for other peoples opinions. No one I know has and aftermarket exhaust that I care for, so therefore I am in the dark about what the sounds each exhaust makes. What is the best way to pick an exhaust if you have no way of hearing them first hand? I want something deep and throaty ( like greddy makes), but nothing too loud. What is the best way for me to pick an exhaust without being disappointed with my purchase? I was thinking EVO but I heard that it is too loud, whose opinions do I trust?
i have the greddy PE, same as evo basically. best sound i have heard from a lude, its a nice low growl, tanabe is too loud unless thats what you want, the greddy is good because it has 2 resonators and the rear can! makes it pretty quiet, my turbo makes it even quieter i can barely hear my exhaust
i've got the greddy evo and i am very satisfied with it. its a deep low tone, its barely heard at idle but under wot it gives a mean growl. personally i don't think its loud at all.
I like my DC.
What you might be able to do is listen to other cars (different cars) with the exhaust. To me a DTM on any car sounds pretty similar, as does a hyper whatever.
I'm sure there are even clips on the web of what they sound like.
The best way is to look for a system with a BIG muffler. The biger the muffler will be, the better will be the noise suppression.
I used to have an N1 type rear-section Muffler (Vibrant Type-V). Even with the stock resonator (very long one), the noise level was astronomically high even at partial throttle. That's mainly because the muffler size is so small (6'' O.D.), it's almost like not having a muffler at all. There is a silencer that goes with it. But you loose so much power (half of the stock output pipe diameter) with it.
Now I have the DC Sports full cat-back. Beautilful piece and very well made. AND So silent at partial throttle. AND a beautilful sound at WOT (at lot less louder that my previous set-up). The DC muffler size is also at lot bigger that the N1 and almost as the stock one.
So look for a big muffler can. Just like the new Greddy EVO, the DC muffler (since many years) has the inlet and outlet pipe not aligned, but still direct. That help a lot for noise supression.
I hear that the APEX'I NI sounds reallly good but I didn't want to pay for it with that price so I got a universal and just did 2.25 piping from the cat back....it sounds like ****.......
so now someone told me that a glass pack instead but I haer that if use a glass pack there are no gain from it and it sounds like ****....any opinions??
I just went thru this whole decision thing and I chose power over convenience. I honestly just walked in the door from gettin my tanabe SRM and it sounds perfect. No loud noise, not some cheesy sound heard on every car. This is straight up artwork, music to a prelude owners ears. That thing is just all out hott, couldn'tve imagined it any better.

The EVO is now availaible for the 4thgen? Good choice. A close friend to mine has one on his 5thgen. Terrific! The only advantage I can see for the DC over the EVO is that the mid pipe is also in SS.
