what is the best sized rim to use with a 225 tire? i was thinking either a 17x7 or a 17x7.5, but im not sure of what offset i would need. the bolt pattern i know is 4x114.3, but what type of offset so the tire doesn't rub.
If you want to use a 225 tire, i would recommend getting a rim with at least +45 or +50 offset. To be safe i would go with a +50 offset or higher but dont go any lower than +45.
I have 17x7.5" with +43 offset riding on 215/40/17 and i barely clear the fenders. (but my car is pretty low)
note: There arent that many 225/??/17 tires to choose from that fit on preludes.

yea i would go 215 if u want more tire but not 225. im not sure about a 225 on any rim xcept maybe 18s or 19s...... but even most 18s run 215s. i have 17s with 215s and i like the height of the wall. i barely clear fenders either and on high speed tight turns i can hear my tires feather the fender well.
u may have trouble fitting 225s under the car unless u got a perfect offset.... never seen it done tho so im not sure....
yeah 215/40/17 is the best tire size for 17's...you have the largest selection in that size and it is the closest tire you can get in 17 inch to the stock overall diameter. Which is good for speedometer accuracy.

Nitto is the only tire company that makes a 225/40/17 tire. You could probably fit it with a +45 and up offset without problems especially only being lowered 1.5". But make sure you don't have anything lower than a +45 offset otherwise you're in trouble. Good luck.
and a 225/40/17 and a 215/40/17 tire are so close in diameter that the speedo accuracy wouldn't be effected considering the speedo is off to begin with.

umm...arent they the same diameter? isn't the first number only pertaining to the width of the tire? so its only like...10MM wider or whatever measurement that first one is in.

no. its sumwhat confusing.. and hard to explain. to my knowledge the numbers work sort of like ratios. the first number pertains to the diameter while the second number pertains to the width, and obviously the last is the size of the rim. a 225/40 will have a larger sidewall than a 215/40..... while a 215/45 will be narrower than a 215/40. i may be wrong but that is my undertsanding. its weird stuff.

i thought the first number was the width of the tire, the second number was the ratio of diameter(so 40 would be 40% of the rims overall diameter), and third was size of rim.
First number= width of the tire in Millimeters.
Second number=the height of the sidewall which is measured in a percentage of the width.
Third number=diameter of the wheel.
225/40/17 and a 215/40/17 tire are so close in overall diameter that it would not really be noticeable on the speedo. Do the math.
and 215 series tire no matter what the diameter of a wheel will always have the same width.
