Here's my odd issue I've been trying to hunt down...I'd appreciate some guidance.
For several months the battery warning light in my '96 H23 has been flickering or turning on dimly. It happens only after the car has been running a while. When I get off the HWY and rpms drop, the warning lights (my ABS is currently on due to bad sensor) will dim. The lights will go to full bright when rpms are over 3K. Periodically, the battery light will flash but never stay on. The battery light does not flash when rpms are up.
I replaced the alternator about 1 month ago (it tested bad) and just replaced the battery (although it tested good)...the light still flickers and the others dim. Help me out
thanks fellas.
I've hunted/replaced grounds and other electical corrosion when I got this car. I feel it's well-grounded now. The alt is re-man w/ built in regulator...it tests fine.
Consider this -- the only place effected is warning light cluster.
No noticeable problems w/ the rest of the dash/car, all other lights are bright, radio works, etc.
Hmm. Are you sure you cleaned out the contacts in the harness that goes to the alternator? I had similar problems with mine due to corrosion on the contacts, both inside the plug on the alternator and in the harness plug itself.
On another note, these re-manufactured alternators are usually not very good. Some of them suck so much that they only last a year or so.
my good friend's CRX did that same thing when he forgot to disdconnect the battery when welding his exhaust, the car ran fine asnd the aslternator worked well it just did that ****
My fear was something like what 4thgenSi mentioned...that power fluctuations harmed some dash/relay component.
I cleaned the alternator connection again-even better. No corrosion was noticed. I also bent the metal connectors so they would better "hold" the prongs. I have not done a lot of driving but //knocks on wood// the battery light has not come on again, though the warning lights still dim at low rpms. I'll just ignore that for now...Thanks all for your inputs.
Just had almost the exact same problem. With the parking brake off the battery light and the brake light were both dimly lit. With the parking brake on the brake light was fully lit and the battery light was fully off.
With the parking brake off, turn the ignition to the "on" position (dont start) this will start the cluster light test. If your battery light doesnt come on, then check fuse #14.
I found this troubleshooting technique at hondahookup.com. Dig around you will find service manuals for all kinds of Honda's, including preludes from 1989 to present.
Were you able to figure out a solution to this problem?
Mine is doing the same thing (battery light flickering), for a couple weeks now. I have a VAFC II so I am able to monitor my battery voltage while I’m driving. When I am sitting at a light my voltage is usually about 12.6, and the battery light sometimes comes on while I am sitting there. I can hit the window down button (with the window down, but puts that extra load on the system) and my voltage will go back to 14.1 or so and the light will turn off. I don’t always have to do that though, I can sit at 12.6 the light will come one, and without touching anything the light will go back off and the voltage will never change.
The thing that seems oddest to me is I have had my battery light come on while I was reading 13.9 / 14.0???
I have a manual (the huge black one) and ran the troubleshooting test and everything tested fine, ground are secure as well.
altenators can do some funny stuff sometimes. id change it just for the heck of it. could be giving bad voltage readings.
make sure both your battery connections are solid and snug on the battery. also check the wiring all the way to the altenator. check both the ground and the plug on the altenator. make sure that plug isnt all corroded from all the volts its producing.
what are you a stalker bro??? you find my posts so you can call me out. people need answers. so i throw in my two cents. get a life and quite following me you ****!
