Bad lifter can anyone help?

I have a bad lifter and i keep researching about it but i cant seem to find a solution.I took it my mechanic and he said it just makes the ticking.
What does a bad lifter do to be exact? How do i fix it? Can anyone help me PLEASE ? AT THIS POINT I DONT KNOW WHAT TO DO?

well chances are its not bad unless its been tapping badly for a long time. first thing i would do before anything else is adjust the valve clearance. theres a decal on the bottom of the hood that tells you the specs for valve lash in (intake) and ex (exhaust) get a set of feeler guages and some hand tools and pop the valve cover if you feel like you can do it.. im sure if you search valve adjustment or something similar theres probably a write up on it this site. if you arent up to it then think twice before you take it to someone. chances are if your mechanic didnt reccomend a valve adjustment when he heard it (tick) then he will just charge you 100 dollars to make the noise go away and theyll still be outta spec
