Bad Ground: Gauges On / OFF - Help

I just picked up this '95 VTEC and am having some issues with the gauges going on / off as well as the temperature gauge acting kind of funny. The temp raises to red quickly, but the motor is not even hot yet. I popped the radiator cap and watched the coolant. The gauge pegged red and then after a second or two the 170* brand new t-stat opened up and started circulating the coolant, fans didn't even come on yet.

When the e-brake is pulled up, the cluster lights up fine. When I put the ebrake down the lights go out and it loses power to the cluster with intermittent flashes of light. I disconnected the wire to the e-brake but the lights went off with those same flashes every now and then.

I read on here in old posts that some people reported a bad ground causing gauges to act funny. My question is, where would I start to look?? I have absolutely no idea what to look for.

Can anyone point me in the right direction?
