MAP sensor making it run rich after my swap same problem. Some of the wires were wrong check that also check what code you are throwing. Go to the engine bay and pull the radio fuse should be the 10 amp red one pull it for 45 sec. then put back in and start your car then turn it off to acc. and then test the code. If you don't know how to check your code let me know.

Are you using the plug wires that were on the engine when you received it? The wires may be in bad shape and need replacing. If there is a small crack in only one of the wires it will cause frequent backfires and occassional hesitation.

Have a look at the distributor , Mine was worn out from Japan and the distributor shaft was loose in the housing. The distributor houses the ignition triggers and any play at all will throw these off, this is a very common problem with all 4th gen Preludes.. Look for a rust colored dust in the distributor and there should be NO radial play in the shaft at all.

i'm actually using nology hot wires, i'll have to take a look inside the distrib tho. Another question, i'm went with the internal coil option when doin the swap, how would i be able to switch to using external? there is a plug underneath the coil from my h23a that isnt on the h22a...where should i start.

and can the backfiring also be a cause of my timing?
