Back brake question

Yesterday I was trying to change my back brake pads. I just changed my front brake pads and bled them in no time. The back brakes were a little different. I couldnt get the clamp open that holds the brakes pads together. My e-brake was down and car was in neutral and still couldnt get the clamp open. I even broken one of those seperater tools. The thing wouldnt budge. Am I doing something wrong or are they just screwed.

Also I heard that the brake dusters weren't. Should I remove those. I also heard that I need to cut a piece off if I were to take them off. Can anyone help out. TY

clamp that holes the brake pads together?

i don't know what you're referring to, but the piston inside the rear caliper has to be rotated clockwise so the caliper could fit over the new pads.

You don't need to disconnect the brake lines or remove the calipers to adjust the caliper piston. Get a 6" C clamp and tighten them back in. You shouldn't have to take them off to get new pads in. You should leave the dust covers on. They help protect from debris and mud.

I think you're referring to the caliper cylinder....On the rear brake calipers you cannot compress the cylinders with a C clamp like you can with front brake calipers. On the rears you have to use the grooves on the cylinder itself to turn the cylinder clockwise until it compresses enough and clears the new pads.

You can use a special T shaped tool that you can buy at autozone for $5 which will fit your 3/8 wrench or if you have a big enough screw driver or chisel, that'll do as well.

hope this helps..

That is interesting Aldo. I didn't know they had the tool for the rears. Good info

Be careful not to tear the rubber boot. When I twisted the rear caliper pistons the dust boots started to move with it. I used a small screwdriver to loosen it up while my cousin turned.
