Approx. How much to chrome a valve cover (decent job though)

For all those 4th gen'ers with chromed valve covers.. how much did it cost approximately? How long did it take them to do it? What do you need to do to take off the valve cover?? Thanks!!! there's a seal under the cover right? How much does a stock valve cover seal run?

Any help would be appreciated!

I had my valve cover and my brothers Del Sol Si cover chromed and they did them both for $300 cash.

We stripped both of the covers of that black coating before we gave it to them so that saved us money.

Take off all the 10mm bolts on top of the cover then lift the spark plug wires, disconnect the breather hose from the intake to the cover and it should lift right off. Once off you will need to remove the valve cover seal and the 4 spark plug seals on the under side. I would definitely recommend getting a new valve cover gasket, I believe it was around $20 from Honda.

It took three weeks to complete because I brought it in right around this time (it's there busy season around this time).

Or you could strip the paint, and use a polishing wheel and get the EXACT same effect for a lot cheaper than 300 bucks.

Just get aluminum polish and polish it yourself. It'll be shiny also. Very cheap and still light weight.

or, pay a machine shop to polish it.

either way, chrome holds in heat

It would take a hell of a lot to SIGIFICANTLY keep the engine bay cool...starting with ceramic header wrapping...hell why not stuff the whole bay with fiberglass insulation? Just get a CAI and hope for the best

pics of polished vs. chrome valve cover anyone?!

Does anyone have pics of a chromed valve cover vs. a polished one? I'd really like to see the polished valve cover to see the difference of chrome vs. polished. Thanks

I don't have pics of a polished cover but here is mine chromed, looks just like the one you posted.

Acclude, if you would have read more carefully, I had TWO valve covers chromed for $300, not just one.

Mark --

I'm not sure now that i hear people talking about it holding more heat ? i mean what's the big diff. b/w polished and chrome? If you would do it again , would u still do chrome or polished? is it that much hotter under the hood? hmm...

I guess technically it could hold in more heat because you are adding three more layers onto the cover (copper, nickel, and the chrome).

Despite this, how much heat could three additional thin layers hold in? Not much. I haven't noticed any additional heat under the hood and my temperature is where it has always been.

Chrome is about three more times as brilliant as polishing. You can see the difference between my polished aluminum DC strut bar and intake tube. Also, the chrome is ALOT easier to take care of, it doesn't pit and become dull like polished aluminum. I'm constantly polishing the strut bar and intake tube to get the shine back. Just slap some car wax on the chrome and you don't have to worry about it any further.

It was worth the money to me.

How do you get the black, stock crap off? Can you get that stuff off, & polish it w/o taking the valve cover off??

You can strip the original paint with "aircraft remover".

Mark94 --

When they chromed your Valve cover, was the underneath of the valve cover chromed as well or just the top face? I wanted to ask taht cuz i don't want the chrome peeling or chipping and mixing with the engine oil (that would totally f*ck up the engine). Can you tell me if the chrome was on the face of the valve cover? Thanks!

The bottom is not coated so you don't have to worry about chipping pieces.

If you get a qulaity job you don't have to worry about chipping period. Mine has been chromed for over a year and it still looks brand new. Go to a Harley Davidson shop and get it done through them. They need to have quality chromers because it would be very costly to redo all the chrome that these bikes are built with. The piece of mind is worth the money.

Sup sean, I used about 5 cans of "import auto paint" in charcoal, and 1 can of 500 degree clearcoat. Lots of hand sanding, repainting and time to get them right, but I love the end result.
