Anything wrong with a straight pipe?

When i bought my car it had a Flow Master muffler on it. I don't particularly like it on there as some of you can imagine. I want to be able to increast airflow to the engine, but at the same time, i don't want to really deal with that noise that comes form the exhaust. So i guess my question would be, is having a custom straight pipe, better than having a muffler. I live in alabama and we don't have to have any type of car emissions. I don't plan on moving anytime soon, so I was just wondering would i increase any extra hp gains/losses because i didn't hav a muffler? I planned on either going 2" or 2 1/4" diameter for the pipe, because i do plan on going turbo by christmas time.

You're having to gas a bit more because of the loss in low end, and it pulls the MPG down a bit.

I ran a straight pipe on my h22 for a while....

Its so loud @ 7krpms that your ears start to bleed. And I was using a cat at the time.

Climb under the car and unbolt the exhaust from the cat back and drive around the block to get an idea of how loud it would be.

I say leave the cat on because it acts as somewhat of a flame arrestor, without the cat running open headers you run the risk of burning the underside of the car from the flames shooting out the exhaust. Seriously.

I noticed an increase in mpg for the month or so that I had open pipe. As long as the pipe all the way back is the same diameter you not going to lose any exhaust gas velocity, and the lack of backpressure is only going to help.
I don't recall having any less power on the low-end, but I did gain huge amounts near redline.

i got highflow cat, str8 pipes, muffler with silencer and all the cool boltons, and i dont burn too much gas at all, matter for fact, i get bout 320 on a full tank with ac in the city ( everyday drive to school or other crap) and bout 390 on the highway. And my dyno chart curves are pretty clean and steady on power and torque from 3k til 62k. I make 141 even on both. If you guys have mileage problems, u should do fuel treatments, run sea foam every once in a while, injector ccleaning, clean throttle body, clean the air filter, change the fuel filter, change park plugs, and change the oil on the regular. My gas mileage now is the same as when i was stock.
