Anyone know anything about "smoked" (dark tinted) side marker/ taillights?
I was wondering if anyone knows anything about "smoked" (tinted) side marker lights or taillights, or anything about the process. When I have seen cars with it done it is primarily Euros like VW's, BMW's, etc.
The smoked lights on the Euros I've seen look pretty nice since they aren't bright amber or red lenses, yet they are not clear-white lenses either. When the lights are off the lenses appear to be a darkish-gray, but when the lights are on you can still see the color of the lens enough to be legal. I subscribe to a number of car mags and have never seen this applied to any Japanese models. It seems to be primarily a Euro trend, but I think it would look pretty sweet as an option between clear lenses and the stock tails and corners.
I do know for sure it is NOT any acrylic type of cover attached to the lens below, like the ones they sell for mostly American cars/trucks that look black. and need to be removed for use at night.
Most VW aftermarket taillights come from Hella, but I don't know if they are manufactured with the tinting or if it is an aftermarket process like a spray applied to the inside of the lens. From what I've read in the articles about cars with "smoked lenses", I think it might be something that can also be done yourself to the stock lenses. I don't know anyone personally with a modded Euro to find out anything myself, but I figured someone out in the Hondasphere might know something about it, or have a friend with a set on their Euro ride.
Thanks for any info you can give,
BionicKris
