anyone elses gauges ever go crazy?

This has happened once since i've owned the car. and again just a few days ago...

All of a sudden the D light starts flashing on me, and the speedometer just starts jumping around. like its being shocked with electricity.

Take the car off and restart it, no poblems.

anyone else experience this?

also fyi, I just replaced my Main Relay with a brand new one to correct a starting problem I had (which worked)

Sounds as if there's a light 12V contact touching a ground somewhere in your dash-light circuit. That might explain why your speedo's jumping and your dash lights flickering.

Have you done the EL gauge swap? After I did mine, for the first few days of having it installed, my speedo needle would sometimes fall down (to zero mph) and then just jump back up to whatever speed I was going.

I've also had my dash lights flicker on me before I did the EL swap... and then they eventually completely died. When I pulled out the gauge cluster, I found a short (a nice nickel sized burn) on the backside of the gauge cluster circuit. Part of the circuit is printed and ran through a plastic sheet. Kind of like a ribbon cable. That's where my short was.

I doubt the main relay would play a factor.

Edit: I just remembered: There were actually 2 shorts on my old cluster. One was also on the main circuit board.

mine still going crazy since I buy it... it goes from the speed it is (about the right speed) to 140mph or just jump to other speed, remains constant to that speed about for a min and then it goes to zero and/or then back to the previous speed .

i switch the needles and didnt solve it...

my old gas/temp gauge had like black spots in the LCD and some times it remains black... untill i got another gauge...

Sounds like the VSS (vehicle speed sensor) to me. I had the exact same issue, speedo bouncing and D4 flashing. Fixed it right up. I also replaced the main relay so sounds like these 2 usually go out together. Its located on the back of the transmission just above the rear mount. Crappy thing is it costs about 130 bucks to replace. Good thing is its real easy just 2 bolts and pop it off.

for any of you with the problem, does it actually affect the driveability of the car for you?

does it bog down or anything?

Mine did this ONE time, but it also was a ***** to get started, and the D light was flashing, that problem neve rhappened again though after I replaced that relay

Like I said the exact same thing was happening to me and replacing the VSS fixed it. It's possible that it is a problem with the gauges but most likely is the VSS. If you get a helms it will tell you how to test the old one but im not sure exactly how it is done. The information the cpu receives from the vss also helps tell it when to shift (with automatic) and how to map the fuel so if it is not working it can cause issues with driveablity.

The problem where your car wouldn't start was most likely the Main relay, which you replaced. So, the other issue of the blinking D4 and wacky speedo was just another problem caused by the VSS that popped up at the same time. By the way id check on that part from ebay to make sure its the right one. It seems WAY under priced, if it is Autozone ripped me off hardcore cause mine cost over $100.

to be more sure about it... look at it... its under the air intake (where it joins the throtle)... down down there in the transmission... you will see some almost with the same look...

when i was going to buy mine I have seen that... but it wasnt like the old one... I found the one I need... i think that in autobarn.com for $30 or something like that
I have manual trans...

that have the wires with it... the one I buy dont have the wires there.

Actually,Check out your ECU and see if somebody chipped it with a spoon chip or some type of performance chip.I heard that those chips can usually mess up your gauges after a while.
