I had recently purchased a 1996 Honda Prelude. I had checked the V.I.N. number online and it had stated that I have a 2.3L prelude Si made in Japan. I had purchased the vehicle for $1200. Only problems are, blown headgasket, water pump and timing belt. I am getting $3700 and had planned to put all the money into the car. The first question: Is This A Good Buy?
Second question: Is This Motor A H22 Or H23?
What Do You Recommend I Should Buy With The Funds Available To Make The Car Look And Sound Amazing?
2.3 liter is an h23. If ur VIN starts BB2 then its an h23 also. BB1 is h22 and BA8 is f22. As for what to do with 3700 in ur shoes? I would get a jdm H22a and swap out the tired h23. If not u could rebuild but it will cost as much as the h22 if ur not doin it urself. As for looks/sound its all up to u. I would suggest intake/header/exhaust for some 1st mods. CAI has been dyno proven to yield better results in terms of hp then short ram. Stock intake isn't as pretty but yields slightly more power over both. Next is a good header. In order to see some good gains ur gonna have to pay. Period. FGK/Mugen are good so is hytech/hytech replicas. Expect to pay 3-500 for these. Also theres the bisimoto header which is 1k. Gotta pay to play lol. As for exhaust u have to find one u like. I have an apexi (which im currently sellin if interested) and I love it. Upgradin piping from 2.5" to 3" n can't use it tho. Also RSR,HKS, Vibrant, Mugen, Greddy Evo.....Just to name a few. All in all it really just comes down to what u want. Hope this helped a bit.
Look at the engine code stamp on the block to verify 4 sure the motor you have.
Open the hood and it's on the left side where the motor meets the trans.
According to what you stated it should be an H23 unless someone along the way swapped it for something else.

Personally, I would get a new motor. An Accord Euro-R H23 VTEC. Prices aren't bad on them but they are hard to find.

They're not hard to find. Hmotors carries them. They can become a headache when it comes time to replace parts though. Some parts from a H22, some from a H23, some that are unique to that engine....PITA if you ask me.
IvanK88: your reply has def helped me out a lot. I was already planning to put in a H22a. Do all H22a's come VTEC? Would I need to get a new tranny for the vehicle? I also have small dents on my front passenger quarter panel. Easy fix? There are a few rust spots on my sunroof. Paint job? I would love to do all the work myself, I'm just not too car savvy lol. How much is the exhaust you're selling? Would there be a problem whith wiring everything back up to the H22a? How bout a B or K series engine?
Honda4life: I had checked all over the engine block for some kind of numbers or codes.
The seller had said that it is VTEC but the V.I.N. number says otherwise.

Yes all H22's period are vtec. Ur engine stamp will be located right by the tranny on the left side of the block if ur facing the motor. Im askin 200 = shipping for my exhuast but im neg. Lemme know if u would be interested init. Any more questions feel free to ask.
K series? I hope you have lots of money. B series not enough power for these cars.
No replacement for displacement.

No u wouldn't need a new tranny unless something is wrong with urs. I run an h23 trans with my setup. Wiring harness could go either way. u can just wire vtec into urs or buy a new one. its really personal preference
You don't know what is wrong with the car. You are assuming. You may do the work and discover bigger problems. You should not have bought that car for $1200. I deem this a bad idea. Back away ASAP.
MaC77Kron: the only problems I have with the car is that the head gasket is blown, and for precautionary measures i'm going to replace the water pump and timing belt.
No u don't need a vtec controller. And as far as vtec controllers go theres only a few good ones on the market, namely the apexi neo/neo 2. Most of the other ones dont actually make the proper adjustments for vtec to be moved the just move the point of engagement.
MaC77Kron: If he's throwin an h22a in it theres no big deal. Think about it. 1200 for the car n another 1200 shipped for the motor. Hes got 2400 into a car with now less then 30k on the engine. How is that not smart?
Thank You Ivank88 I really appreciate all your help. I will be receiving the money from my army bonus sometime in may or april then I will be doing all the stuff to the car. I'm just not a very big car person and this is my first import turner.
Get the type s intake with the k&n drop in filter. you wont have a shiny metal tube but it gives you a good hp gain without killing your mpg from what i have been told. i will be switching my short ram to a type s this week.

the h23 vtec is nice and is really mean i think my buddy had one in his civic and the vtec hit really hard idk if that engine was just mean or they all are but it was nice and would smoke more h22's
Thank you for everyone's input. I have decided to keep my h23 and rebuild it. Just to get the car running all I need is a head gasket. I'm also replacing the water pump and timing belt just for precautionary measures. I'm def putting in a full exhaust, intake, and i might do some valve and cam work. The only thing that I'm worried about is the head, I'm not too sure if it's warped. Is there an easy way to tell without taking it to the shop? A stock h23 has 170 hp and a stock h22 has 220 hp. I feel that it would be most cost effective for me if i were to just fix the h23. 50 hp difference? No Problem. easy compensation. Any suggestions with this idea?
