I was thinking about replacing the antenna with a short VW type on, rubber and constantly up. Would that look good? Or maybe a shorter antenna. When mine is up is seems really tall and fugly. Would it be easy to just go out and buy a shorter antenna and replace the current one or are there special things I need to do because it's a motorized antenna?

Disconnect the PWR ANT or ANT wire from your stereo and viola ! Antenna stays down and still get reception ( that's how mine is right now ) I rarely use radio anyway since I have an MP3 headunit.
Sweet. I'm about to install an aftermarket head unit anyways so this is perfect. Thank you for the info! Would my Eclipse 55040 have a input for the PWR ANT?
Im not sure about Eclipse stereos...But do you happen to have a pic of the harness that connects to the car ? Just look for the ANT wire , it should be blue/white.
if you are gonna run an amp to your head unit though you still might need that ant. power line because some amps require you to hook that line up to it so they know when to turn on. if you cut the line from the back of the head unit then you won't be able to use the ant. power line in the back of the car...correct me if i'm wrong. you'll have to run another line to the trunk or wherever you plan on putting your amp.

there are two seperate wires for this. as diff. manufacturererurs use diff. colors the ant wire might not be blue/white, it will be there. there is also a seperate wire for the amps though

Depends on the head unit. My Pioneer only had one remote lead that served as the power antenna lead AND the amp turn-on lead. My Alpine has two separate wires blue+white for antenna, solid blue for amps I think. The only difference is that with separate wires, the antenna goes down when you play a CD. If there's only one wire, the antenna will stay up whenever the head unit is on.

well if you want, you could either find a shorter mast. i don't know if they would work with an OEM motor, but there are replacement units out there available. for a while i was looking for a new motor/mast assembly, and i found some aftermarket ones for around $70 or so~ universal ones.
