ANOTHER exhaust question...but I seriously want help

Ok, so I know you guys probably hate these questions by now but please give it a chance! I've been reading a fair amount of threads and info about catbacks and want to buy one soon (especially since my current muffler is about to die). I would like a balance of not much louder than stock, but obviously one that has some power gains, however minimal they may be. Unfortunately I make 10 hour trips several times a year and like to do 80mph, which means 4000rpms. Wouldn't want a loud exhaust for 10 hours straight thanks. If it wasn't for that damn 5th gear ratio!
I was thinking Apexi WS but now I'm not sure, heard some complaints about them in terms of adding nothing to the car. Maybe they do, maybe they don't. So I guess that begs the question of what else is a little louder than stock and feels stronger. Any thoughts - and please don't say RSR unless you are going to sell yours to me!
The other option I'm considering is buying a performance muffler and then gettting custom piping. Some people say this is great and cheap but others say this can be really noisy. Who has done this? Also, which muffler would you recommend if I took this route? Oh, by the way I have a 93 Si.
Thanks guys!!

Do not go with the muffler and custom piping. they are always are gonna be loud as hell and nasty sounding on WOT. and at 4k RPM, thats the last thing you would want. as for the Apex'i not giving enough gains..... the butt dyno isnt always accurate for some people . who would make a $400 exhaust system that makes no gains? people just say it doesnt give any gains because its really quiet. If you are looking an awesome daily driving exhaust system, the Apexi WS is the ****. If you dont want it to be that quiet, I believe that DC Sports makes a nice sounding exhaust too.

take care,
tim

i have a powertech B3 bomb muffler w/ silencer insert on custom piping on my 93 si. when i first got it was loud as hell... but after a few months it toned down a little as most mufflers do. I have hour long round trips to college a few days a week so I didn't want it to be incredibly loud. The odd thing is that it is actually loudest at 3k rpm, and at 4 it is pretty quiet. Anyway, my point is, it's just as loud as i wanted it to be now that it has settled down, and if i take a really long trip somewhere i just stick the silencer in there and it cuts it down drastically, but it also noticably cuts the power output too.

actually, apex'i says it doesn't give you any peak gains either. Its designed to add midrange power.

also, FWIW, I have a custom exhaust and it sounds great.

I've heard nothing but good things about apex'i. Go with the ws, it sounds clean as hell.
