Stupid question, but did you loosen the alternator bolts and move the alternator down instead of just trying to shove the belt on there?
If all else fails, set the alternator to a bit less than the middle of the adjustment range, grab a piece of string and thread it around the same path the belt takes. Tie it off and take it to the autoparts store. Tell them to find you a belt that is the same size as the string
