AEM EMS or Hondata

Which would be the better ECU replacement modification...the AEM EMS or the Hondata system?

it all depends on what your tuners are familiar with.....AEM has a crapload of options, and more tunablity, but if you or your tuner doesn't know how to use it, it's useless. Right now, a lot more people are on hondata, which eases the tuning issue.

Acutally AEM is a whole ECU replacement, while with hondata you have to modify your ecu depending on what ecu you have.

i have the older hondata 2b...hondata has since come out with the s100 and s200.

You are OBDI and have what appears to be an AEM CAI as performance mods. I'd say Hondata would be a better choice at this point.

How crazy are you going to get w/ your setup? More shops can tune Hondata, so I'd say to go w/ them. AEM is still too new, esp on Lude applications. More & more civics & tegs running FI setups are able to be tuned w/ the AEM, but even they are running into a lot of holes & glitches w/ the AEM system.

Hmmm...I may just stick with Hondata since they only focus on one manufacturer. I dunno though...

I have the AEM and having a hard time getting it tuned. There's a few bugs in it also. Unless you are going to play around with the tuning yourself, then it will probably cost a pretty penny to get it tuned. I took my car to an "authorized installer" and they screwed it up
I do think that AEM will be a good choice once they get things worked out.

The way things seem, though, is that it'll take AEM a while to get their bugs worked out. All the mags say the same thing--it has potential, but not even the base maps can make most of the cars run right.

I'm in the same debate...AEM or Hondata for my turbo setup. I think this has been the hardest decision out of all the pieces i need to buy. Everytime I think I've decided on one, I hear something negative about it and then I start second guessing myself.
Hondata has the ease of tuning - plus I have the added bonus of being only an hour away from an excellent Hondata tuner. But the negative is the cost of switching to OBD I. And also the whole chip burning thing..I hear its no big deal but then I also hear its a hassle. I do want to eventually tune the car myself.

Aem costs around the same without having to convert ECU's since its a total replacement. A tuner is within 20 minutes but I don't know how good they are with it..I hear about all bugs with AEM but then I hear that its a great unit and that once you get things started, it gets easier.

I just don't know which one would be more beneficial for me

Much of the research points to OBD I being better for hp gains, so I'd go w/ that alone.

Isn't there a few other standalones? like the Haltek (I believe Dirtylude has that one) and I think there's the Accel DFI and a few others that might be worth checking out

Dirtylude has a Haltech. It comes with 0 basemaps, but one he got it hooked it he managed to get the car running fairly quickly..

I have a AEM sitting on my desk here beside me.. Problem is I have a h23 and AEM doesn't have ANYTHING at all for my engine. Good thing I can get m hands on a Wideband O2 sensor......

I knew it!!!!

Seriously Grant you could take the H22 base maps to start with, remap for your injectors, take out the cam switching and you would likely run fine until you tuned it. I doubt you would even be running lean.

There are others, like the Haltek, and the Tek-2 & Tek-3, but it's a matter of finding a tuner for these standalones. Many more people tune the Hondata than do the others...

That's not a problem around here, we don't have any tuners actually I think there's a Hondata tuner 5hrs away where the closest dyno is...

Trust me, I feel your pain very much. In the cultural vacuum of Mississippi, I have to drive 4 hours to get to any shops, period.
