AEM CAM gear owners...HELP PLEASE

Ok so I decided to buy some cam gears..cheap too AEM in blue/75 bucks for the pair. Anyway Where/how did you install them?? I mean if you did it at a shop did they cut your valve cover and timing belt cover for you?? Is this a DYI job? I am pretty mechanicly inclined. But will I need a timing gun?? or other tools. If a shop does this what did it cost you. Anyhelp would be great

its sorta hard to do to tell you the truth.. unless you know a lot about cam installation.. the cams have to be taken out and you have to relubricate them and ****, is one pain in the ass... i would take it and have it done.. i dont see them charging you anymore than 160 bux.. also i would go to a performance shop and see if they can cut your valve cover so you can see both, or else you wont be able to adjust them without taking the valve cover off.. having them cut makes it easy for dyno tuning..

There is no need to pull the cams. They stay in place. You will need to loosen the tensioner, and pull the timing belt back off the gears. All you need to do is break the Tq on the Cam gears, andpullthem off. Be carefull to no loose the little Woodruff key, (especially behind the timing cover.) I good thing to do is before you slide the Timing belt off the factory gears, get yourself some whiteout, and make a mark on the belt and factory gears. Then you can transfer the white mark off the factory gears and onto your AEM gears. Just make sure that the AEM ones are set to 0 degrees. Then all you have to do is slid the belt back on over the new gears and make sure that your white marks line up. You will need a timing light, because when you adjust the exhaust cam timing the ignition timing will go out, (the distributor is driven off the exhaust cam). To cut the valve cover, just get a hack saw with a nice fine blade for metal cutting, and a file. Make a straight line where you want to cut, and cut with the Hacksaw. The metal is VERY thin, so it cuts easily. I would just cut off the face of the part covering the gears, leave the belt covered. If you are mechanically inclined and you have the parts, I would give yourself about 2 hours. I can do it in about an hour, but I have done quite a few. My first one was about 2 hours. Very easy if you take your time. Save the money for the install and do it yourself.

yeah your right except when you said keep the cams in and loosen un-torque the cam gear bolts... this is very hard to do without moving your cams and i have seen many people pop the cam right out or move it to where they had to reset it etc.. sometimes can lead to a messy situation.. just be careful..

what kind of gains can be for-seen from tuning the cams....... w/ stock cams shafts?
I'm pondering getting some. The guy i got the car from said he had "re-grinded cams" put in the car.. i took the valve cover off and they are PERTY.. so obviously re-surfaced at the least.. but i have no idea as to what specs or any specs at all.

boy you brought this thread back from the dead...I take it you did a search on cams cuz of the webcams thread.

anyway I wouldn't say I noticed any huge gains on my stock cams. Maybe a total of 1-2hp increase...might be diff with aftermarket/regrinds
