About to buy a 93

Hey everyone, so in about a weeks time i will be most likley buying a 93 prelude. I believe it is an S, with a 5 speed.

it has 100,000 miles on it and recently had a new water pump and timing belt put on.

What are some major problems to look for in this car? and how expensive is it to fix things when problems arise?

Thanks for your time

1. probably want to spend time searching "problems" or whatever, but mostly rust in rear 1/4 panel and CC controls crapping out

2. its a honda, not that expensive. the car is 15 years old, parts are plentiful

Sun roof? Checl for rust around it. I don't think you can check these at the time or purchase, but some common problems I have run into on my daughter's car:

Vehicle Speed Sensor - these go bad, speedometer stops working amount other dash items. Pretty easy to replace, just awkward.

Main Relay? (or is it fuel pump relay) - In hot weather the car will start and then die quickly. It will not start again (but turns over). This relay controls the fuel pump so no fuel - no start . Pretty easy to replace, up under the driver's side dash.

Oil leaking near the oil filter. There are several spots in this area that can leak. Parts are not expensive, but hard to get to.

Not sure if it's common, but our '92 radiator was leaking last year. Easy to replace.

Good luck and they are great cars.

1. hmm i thought the vss wasn't too big of a problem as CC but i've seen some stories.

2. main relay is another problem but the car wouldn't start w/o it working. when it goes out, i usually think its user error (installing some electronics in the car) but there are other obvious reasons it could blow

3. oil usually leaks from the cam seals + normal oil usage of vtec (if you have it which a S doesn't)

4. you can sometimes tell on the sunroof because it will bubble...

bascially he described common problems with all cars 15 years +. still things to watch out for.

100,000 miles for a 15 year old car means the car *may* have sat for a while. Check to see if it still has the original calipers and rotors, if so, you'll probably need rotors soon and the calipers may need to be rebuilt or replaced down the road. Had this happen to me. :0

test drive it most importantly. Drive it until it gets warmed up all the way to see if everything still functions properly. Check for leaks after you get back from test drive. Check for rust around the rear quarter panels and sunroof. Check make sure all climate control/cruise control settings work etc. Get all service papers, ask if tbelt was changed. How many miles on the car?

test drive

have taken it for a test drive and it runs well, and there appears to be no leaks. it has 210,000 miles on it but a recent warrant and rego. no rust around the sun roof.
