96 VTEC, TD61U or TD77U distributor?

Hello, this is my first post but I have been reading for a few weeks and I am very impressed with the quality of the posts I found here.
I recently purchased a 1996 Prelude VTEC. The "CEL" light is on and giving a code #9. As per the information I found here and on various other internet sites, the distributor is at fault and needs to be replaced. My wife also has a 1992 Prelude SI so I thought about switching distributors but they are not the same. In the 96, the distributor is a TD77U model and the 92 SI is a TD61U model. Everywhere I check, it says a 96 VTEC should have a TD61U disty. Is it possible the previous owner installed the wrong distributor and changed the connectors or is it really supposed to be a TD77U?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you for your time and understanding.

You might do a cap+rotor replacement first. It's highly likely that's your issue rather than the entire dizzy.

Since you purchased the car recently, I would suggest doing a full tune-up. I don't think this info is in the 4th gen forum, but the 5th gen forum has a FAQ I put together which has periodic maintenance info in it. Should apply to 4th gens also.

The distributors are different. 96 and up preludes should have the TD77U due to odb2. TD61U are for odb1 preludes.

Thanks, that's what I figured, I just wasn't sure.
Would anyone have other suggestions in regards to fixing CEL Code #9. I know for a fact the current distributor on my 96 Prelude was replaced not to long ago and it still looks brand new. What are the chances it would have gone bad in just a few months?
Thanks in advance.
