96 prelude vtec has intermittent starting problems

This car is a 94 accord with 96 prelude vtec engine. This winter there were a couple of times that it would turn over but not start. After several days of sitting and trying it would suddenly start and run fine. For the last couple of months if my son kills it at a light sometimes it takes a few minutes to restart. Sometimes when he goes to school, it will just not start and later in the day it starts up and runs fine...ANy ideas?

Sounds like the common bad main relay problem.

Several factors here need to check..

Check Spark Plugs & Leads , Make sure your getting a good connection
Fuel Filter Could possibly due for replacement...
Also is there any other problems with the car , such as idling or smokiness from the exhaust as to my knowledge it could be running rich had a similar problem & the carbon desposits were really leaving their mark on my pistons & head ...

Its really hard to diagnose the problem right away but I say one of these could be factor for why you may be having these issues

The main relay is behind the steering wheel way up under the dash.

Main relay

I would have to agree that it is the main relay. I had the same problem about year ago then changed it, and now it starts right up every time. I got it online for about $40 bucks and it takes about 15 minutes to change. There are some good write ups on this site. i.e. the reason I joined this. Do a search, its very easy to do.
