94 Timing Belt

Got a 94 Prelude 2.2 vTec that I put a new water pump and Timing belt set on. Car drove fine for a solid week then lost compression. Pulled the Valve cover off and the belt has moved over rub the inside VC wall. I didn't hear anything break when it happened haven't tore it back down yet so not sure it anything broke or not. Anyone have a suggestion as to what might have happened?

so you lost compression and the only thing you could find wrong was that the timing belt is rubbing against the valve cover?

Lost compression on ALL cylinders?

If so, maybe it skipped a few teeth and bent all or most of your valves. H22's are supposedly non-interference engines except while in VTEC. Were you just driving along and it all of a sudden died?

Skipped a tooth or two sounds reasonable, although why?

On the 5th Gens we have an autotensioner, but if I’m not mistaken you 4th Gen guys have the manual one. Did you put tension on the belt as described in the shop manual? Torqued the bolt properly? Maybe it backed off? I think you can check that bolt; if I’m not mistaken it protrudes through the plastic cover.

Skipping a tooth on the crank pulley could certainly result in no compression in all cylinders as the valves are all out of sinc. With a little luck you haven’t damaged any valves, but that would be better luck than I normally have.

I would first check that tensioner bolt and then pull off those covers and see about crank and cam gear alignment.

Not sure about that last comment…. “Non-interference engines except while in VTEC”; it’s either an interference engine or not, and unfortunately I think just about all Honda engines are interference. VTEC merely changes the time when the valves open, but when things happen out of sequence it doesn’t matter if you’re in VTEC or not. Fingers crossed that you haven’t damaged any valves.

Let us know.

Not entirely true. Here are the lift specs for the intake and exhaust camshafts. The VTEC lobe has greater valve lift (mid is the VTEC lobe):

Intake
secondary = 8mm
mid = 11.5mm
primary = 6.5mm

Exhaust
secondary = 7.5mm
mid = 10.5mm
primary = 6.0mm

So yes, its possible that it could be an interference engine only in VTEC due to the greater valve lift. Anyone want to take apart their H22 and clay the pistons to check?

Clearly I need to get smarter about how that VTEC works.

Thanks for the info G Loc.
