94 prelude super hard start question...

ok ive got a 94 prelude... and its a pain to start... only when its cold though. when its cold, as in its sat overnight or for more than oh say 5 hours, it will take between 2 and 5 minutes to start. always the same process to start it though. simply cranking it isnt enough. i also have to hold the gas to the floor, crank it, turn it off, crank it again, and again and again, and eventually a cylinder will fire... then turn it off for a sec, and crank it again... then a couple cylinders will fire... then turn it off, crank it again, and either have to do it a couple more times or it may start, depending on how its feeling... and even then i have to give it gas for a while to keep it running... once it warms up just a bit its fine, and by a bit i mean run for 2 minutes... sooo im wondering what could cause this... thanks for any help... kindof a more urgent question too... thanks though

edit: also http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...1010001s-1.jpg on that picture on the lower front corner of the head right behind the water outlet, there are two sensors, a tiny one and a larger one... what is the larger sensor? i accidentally broke it off when i replaced the clutch, never replaced...

sencond edit
http://www.m1xe.com/pics/92exr/headc...rannysides.jpg see that electrical connector on the side of the head? thats the one... what is that? its what i broke off... thanks

I've been trying to figure out this exact same problem for the past 3 winters. I've replaced every ignition related component, battery, starter, alternator, ECT sensor, main relay, ignition switch, and probably a bunch of other stuff I can't remember. I even went as far as installing a block heater as sort of a band-aid fix, but even that didn't work. Just save yourself the trouble and give up lol.

I had the same issue with my 92 si. In my case though it wouldn't idle at all! Instead I kept dropping to 0 rpms and dying. It ended up being a bad ignition coil (starting) and a filthy carboned out IACV.

Have you checked your battery to see if it has enough cca? maybe the battery is going bad. And replace that ect sensor your car may run rich from that as mine did for a bit.

Try tps but the temp sensor being broken off or not hookedup means the car is either thinking its hot all the time or cold all the time. Its designed to send a signal indeffinately. As for the way you're starting. The continual cranking will burnout the starter i was going to say check the starter to make sure its fully engaging the flywheel. But if it starts with ether than thats not it. By the way the ether WILL burn your rings and you soon will have bigger problems. Unhook one sensor at a time and try starting. Sorry obd1 sucks for fixing, all this troubleshooting instead of scan, replace, drive lol

Yes i would try replacing the engine coolant temperature sensor (ECT sensor) The sensor is located under the distributor and has a Green/White and Yellow/Blue wire going to it. Should be too hard to replace.
