'93 prelude, digital heat gage -hot?

My car has the "digital" heat gage that looks like a rainbow, it usually runs at the top or center light, but sometimes goes to the next left light, how hot is this? I can run 75 for an hour and this next light will come on, other times, not at all. When I park and shut it off, the fan will run a couple of times, then stop. Coolant levels are right, and it uses none. I know the holes for air flow are quite small, any ideas?
My fuel gage works the same way, like a rainbow, sometimes it says it has 3/8ths of a tank, then boom, it goes to bottom, then after a while during which time, I'm looking for emergency fuel, the gage comes back up... and I get more fuel!
Aside from all the quirks, I love the car, 27.7 MPG! -- Jon

Could be as simple as needing to bleed your coolant system.

Can you give more info for this assessment? Why would less coolant make it run cooler? --J

It's not bleeding it to run less coolant. You bleed it to remove small air bubbles that can get trapped in the system. With your fuel level reading issue, could be a faulty sender in the tank. Ever replaced your fuel pump or any of that equipment?

Seems odd, because it doesn't not run hot all the time. Please describe "bleeding" how is it done?

The fuel pump is in the tank right? No, I've never messed with it. --J

The thermostat housing is on the backside of the engine on the passenger side. Loosen the bolt labeled #14 in the picture, you'll know it when you see it. Begin filling the radiator with coolant until a steady stream of coolant with no bubbles comes out of the bleeder bolt. Tighten it back down and there you have it, you just bled the cooling system.

miss something-?

I think I missed something, "begin filling the radiator until coolant comes out with no bubbles"..... was I supposed to drain it first? Or just add more to it? Thanks for the help!! --J
