There was no way my speakers were going to fit into any of the stock "buckets"/plastic mounting brackets.
The steel basket of the speaker was big enough that I would have needed to hack the plastic until there wasn't enough left to hold the speaker.
And since I was using cheapo speakers instead of specialty low mounting depth speakers in the rear, I needed something else to jack them up a bit. So they wouldn't hit the torsion springs of the trunk lid.
Yea isn't 6.5" the stock size? I'm running 6.5" all around and the only thing I had to do was make some spacers for the front speakers. The rears are about 1mm away from the torsion bars heh
You could always remove the torsion bars, the trunk will just be hard to open
Maybe it is just your speakers. I had 5.25" speakers up front for a while and those didn't fit in the basket. I had to cut out some of the back. Rears fit without any modification.
I put in 6.5" speakers in front and back with no issues. Just removed blown stock speakers and popped in the new Sony replacements I bought. No messing with anything. The stock units I removed were the same diameter.
i had to do quite a bit of custom work to fit my 6.5" Alpine Type-r components in the front and rear. the Alpine components are over-sized 6.5" speakers.

I think there is something funny going on here. I understand that basket size and depth can be very different from one speaker to the next. However, shouldn't the bolt circle be the same diameter for all 6.5" speakers. If not, then there is almost nothing standard about the 6.5" standard.
I just measured the very outermost diameter of the factory speakers with my calipers, that measurement was 6.2 inches. That's not 6.5 by any interpretation that I can fathom.

Yep I have Type-R's as well. Those mids are damn big.

You didn't measure the opening in the door and the basket?
Can anyone give me an exact model to use in the rear so I don't hit the trunk spring? After buying some at the store that said shallow mount on them I had to return them because they still didn't fit.

Well, I'm not really talking about the front door speakers. As I said, the front speakers went in without too much hassle, just had to throw out the plastic bracket, and replace it with some firm foam spacer. Moot point, because I'm not going to take the door panels off again to check the diameter of the opening in the metal part of the door.
My main point was that my factory speakers were not 6.5" by any legitimate method of measurement.
I will measure the ID of the rear plastic brackets later, and the front brackets if they are still intact. Maybe somebody can use that information if the speaker manufacturers make drawings available that specify minimum hole diameter.

Ok, I have now measured the factory speakers and brackets with my calipers.
For the record I have a 96 S. I am told all in 4th gen are the same, YMMV.
I am fairly certain that what I am measuring are the original factory speakers, because they have the Honda factory connector on them.
Here is the info. Some of the trailing decimal places are probably meaningless.
Rear deck speakers: Very outermost diameter of the metal speaker basket -- 6.2" I.D. of the hole in the plastic mounting bracket, AKA cutout diameter -- 4.917"(124.9mm) Mounting depth of speaker (NOT available depth, which is probably more) -- 1.81"(46mm)
Diameter of the bolt circle not measured, I assume is the same as the front
Door Speakers: I.D. of the hole in the plastic mounting bracket, AKA cutout diameter -- 4.966"(126.2mm) Diameter of the bolt circle -- 5.485"(139.3mm)
For my cheapo Jensen 6.5's neither the cutout diameter nor the bolt circle was compatible
I think I will post this in its own thread also

6.5" is the stock size, period, but ask if they have 2models of the same speaker. case and point: I put some new Bostons in my doors, first ones I picked up, same issue you all are discussing here. took 'em back and told them "no go", he was like, "oh yeah, its a honda, you need these", same speaker but with an "SC" on the end of the model, sure enough, same 6.5" speaker, smaller basket, der.
I am satisfied that the "nominal" speaker size is 6.5" even though it is not a real dimension of anything.
The important thing is, you cannot just buy any 6.5" speaker and assume that it will fit. The point of my last post was to try and provide information that somebody could use to figure out which ones will fit, and which ones won't. The Crutchfield website at least provides the cutout diameter of the speakers.
