Here comes the unpopular point of view...
I'm going to go out on a limb and assume that the car in your signature is yours, in which case it looks pretty clean and well put together. It doesn't look sloppy. Work like that doesn't generally come cheap, or if one does it them self, to attain a finished result as polished as that, they must invest quite a bit of care into the work.
Why go to the trouble of having a nice clean car if you're going to skimp on parts after a while? If you want the look of brand new carpet, and can actually find brand new carpet made specifically for your car, why not "break down" and buy it? It just seems like such a hassle to buy the wrong part and then go modifying it to be
almost the right part when the right part is available for sale brand new.
Consider: I purchased a '67 Cadillac convertible recently. Among other things it needs a new interior. I was quoted $8000 for said interior which includes carpets, miles of leather, door panels, dash pad, steering wheel restoration. That is a hefty price tag, and I know I could have some hack do it for a quarter of the price using vinyl and a generic pattern, but it wouldn't look right. I don't have $8000 that I can (in good conscience) spend on leather right now (oh dirty thoughts) so what is in the car will have to do, because I won't lower my standards for the sake of expediency. I don't think you should either, as it appears you take a great deal of pride in your vehicle as well.
In the end though, it is
your car, and
your standards.
