5th gen to 4th gen tranny swap-which fits?

I'm a 4th gen noob. I'm not really sure how to search for what I need to know here:

Which manual transmissions fit the H22A4 from the 4th gen?

Are the H23 and H22 4th gens identical? Will they both fit? Is the gearing the same between them?

See, I have a broken 5th gen tranny and I don't want to buy a 5th gen tranny because I don't trust them anymore and the gearing is too long/tall. If anyone has a comparo between the 3 trannies I'd like that too.

Meanwhile I'll keep searching

The 4th Gen H22, H23, and even F22 trannies will fit. The gearing is different for each though. With the H23 tranny, many people have a hard time staying in VTEC for the 1-2 shift. The 4th Gen H22 tranny has the shortest gearing of all the trannies, the F22 the longest.

97-01 prelude 5 speed trannys will boltup
92-96 prelude 5 speeds will bolt on(incl.vtec,h23 and S models)
i hope that sums it up
Does everyone agree about this?

Thanks for your reply cantdrive55, It sounds like you said the same as above.

Yep, Joel could go into more detail on the gearing between the different trannys though.

well if you can find the gear ratio of each go to www.autocrossing.com there's a gearing calculator and you'll know what the top speed would be on your car cause top speed changes with tire size and max RPM I can tell you the ratios for the Prelude trannys but not the others

____S___ Si_ VTEC 5th gen 5th gen

1st_3.31 3.31 3.31 3.285__ 3.31
2nd 1.81 1.86 1.95 1.956___1.86
3rd_1.23 1.32 1.36 1.344___1.32
4th 0.90 1.03 1.07 1.034___1.03
5th 0.71 0.81 0.87 0.812___0.81

FD_ 4.06 4.27 4.27 4.266

I have different number for the 5th gen, don't know which one is correct and also I don't have any FD ratio for that last 5th gen but I think it would be the same as the other

I think tire size is 24" for the stock 5th gen tires and 23.65" for the stock 4th gen (15" wheel)
Anyone varify the 5th gen ratios?

if I remember rightly, 5th gear in the 4th gens was 1.00:1.

the 4th gens gearing allowed 0-60 in 2nd, not having to shift to 3rd.

if there was ever a car desperate for a 6th gear, it was the preludes....

these are the 6spds ratios...

First Gear Ratio (:1) 3.933
• Second Gear Ratio (:1) 2.478
• Third Gear Ratio (:1) 1.700
• Fourth Gear Rato (:1) 1.250
• Fifth Gear Ratio (:1) 0.976
• Sixth Gear Ratio (:1) 0.771
• Reverse Ratio (:1) 4.008
• Clutch Size (in) Not Yet Available
• Final Drive Axle Ratio (:1) 3.286

but alas, it won't fit... I wonder if the guts could be moved... hmm...

h23 gears are a lil longer cause i can hit like 63 mph where the 4th gen h22 tranny can hit 60.

Update:
I've gone with a 1995 JDM 5 speed transmission with factory LSD. Now I haven't found out any specs on it yet, but if ya'll know please send it my way.

This also means I'm going to have an extra 5th gen transmission that needs a new 2nd 3rd and 4th gear set. I'll have time to break down the main shaft and secondary shaft and can take measurements of the the gears etc. Then I can see if the K-series transmission gears will retro-fit. My guess is that the gears will mesh 90deg off the pattern of the H-series so I may have to experiment with F and H series combos to get a nice custom tranny.
Any thoughts?
