5th Gear Grind?

All gears shift perfect, but 5th gear gives me a slight grind. If I let the RPM's roll down and shift it into gear slowly, it usually slides right in.

If I'm not being careful however and just throw it into 5th it usually grinds a little. The kid I bought this car from said the clutch is fairly new, only 15k miles on it. I've only had this car on the road for about a week so I don't know the difference between new and old :P.

I'm assuming it's the clutch, but I lost a little transmission fluid when my cv shaft fell out. Would a little fill up of Transmission fluid do the trick maybe?

Thanks

i got the same problem that im about to fix at my pops' shop, except mine is third which i hear is more common but im positive its your synchro gears for that gear. i checked both things first since taking apart the tranny is the last thing you wanna do and my clutch was working normally and tranny was full on oil. if either of the other 2 you listed were problems youd have trouble with all your gears but its gotta be that synchronizer gear.

That's the first thing I thought, but a buddy started rambling other things, so naturally I questioned it. But thanks for the information dude it definitely does make sense that it could be the synchronizer .

My old trans did the same thing in 5th. If you don't want to hear the grind just double clutch.

5th gear would grind on my JDM H22 swap tranny before it would warm up. It would sometimes also grind after being warm if I shifted too fast...

Like incredipaul said, double clutch and you'll be fine. Just takes a bit to get the hang of double clutching, but after a while you don't even think about it.

but wouldnt double clutching just shorten the life of your clutch and youd still have a jacked 5th gear?

Try changing to a tranny fluid like synchromesh, etc. But what you have is the known "5th gear grind" on a 5th gen. My roommate has the same issue on his. Hes had his car for sometime now, and worked around it. He's tracked the car a billion times too.

I put nearly 30k on my lude with the 5th gear grind and double clutching. Still drives fine. You may not need to double clutch all the time, simply shifting slower might be a way around it.
