5 lug swap: which splash shields?

Picked up the parts for the 5 lug conversion today. Everything looks to be in good condition (just a little dirt and surface rust), however the black splash shields are a little beat up since the rear of the car was sitting on the ground. Do you have to use the 5th gen splash shields, or can the 4th gen ones be substituted? Are they even really needed at all? It would be a lot easier to straighter out the ones on the 5th gen pieces so I dont have to remove the rear spindle nuts.

no i think he is talking about the shield around the brake. correct Red? to tell you the truth i dont know. mine were in pretty good shape. i did try to remove them there is two screws, and then you could cut them off if you decide to not use them.

By splash shields I mean the thin, black sheet metal covers that mount inboard of the hubs.

Ahhhh . . . that makes sense. I guess I'll just have to beat them back into shape when I put them on. Only the rear ones are bent up, the front ones are fine.

you don't need the Dust shields. Just makes things look blah. I just left mine w/out them

I was under the impression that the shields actually were fairly important, preventing foreign debris from getting lodged in the caliper or rotor and causing a potential for trouble.

Advantages in having a wider selection of big brake systems, rims, and to just be different

its not needed at all. it just to help with the brake dust from the pads. I've had them off for quite a while now running with brembo 4piston calipers and no probs. Also since i had the bigger brakes in the front i couldn't run the dust shield so hence i had to remove it. Also on my 98 240sx i removed them all when doing the 300z brake caliper upgrade, 1yr and no probs what so-ever.

How do they help reduce brake dust, since the mount inboard of the rotor/caliper/wheel?

from what i kno it helps with the brake dust from gettin onto ur wheels. I maybe wrong, that is what i have always been told, all it really does is get in the way and prevent the rotors from cooling faster.

Actually what it's for is to prevent mud, water, and other debris from getting on your rotor/caliper/brake lines/etc.

Thats what I figured. I don't think they prevent dust on the wheels at all, since they mount on the wrong side of the rotor .
