4ws swap

I have been up all night browsing po.com. like from 11pm to now which is 4am. **** i forgot that i've got court in the morning. anyway. i have not noticed anything about 4ws swap. i really don't care about the functionality of 4ws, the expense and what not. i just want to have it cause it ****ing rocks!!

so does anybody know about doing a swap on this. what all would i need? where does it all go? mechanically, i understand most of the stuff i need. but isn't there and angle sensor in the rear of the car AND one in the engine? where does that one go? let get something started here.

too many parts, too much stuff.

sell your lude and go get a 4WS if you want it that bad cuz i dont know about the chances of a conversion ever working properly

All the rear suspension arms and links are different. There are some extra mounting point on the chasis as well.
You will need a front steering rack from a 4ws lude for the sensor in there, and all the wheel speed sensors.
Not to mention the 4WS computer in the trunk (which has 48 wires going to it) and the rear steering rack.

Good luck.

Absolut is right, the 4WS system is not an easy swap. It requires many parts and is very in depth. The system uses ABS speed sensors to calculate steering angels and there is also a motor which is mounted under the car for power to the tie rods.

You're right though, 4WS rocks!

does the 4WS handle better? or just turn tighter?

I definately want 4WS (It's what made me fall in love with the lude in the first place) but I've never had a chance to drive a 4WS.... Although I'm talking to a guy with a 93 4WS 5speed. with 99k and all maintenance records... he wants 6800 for it, I think its a decent price, but I would like to get it lower...

If I had the chance to pick out my car again here is what I would look for. '94 Prelude 4WS (so I can get EL gauges) and swap in a JDM H22A.

That way you end up with about the best of everything the 4th gens had to offer.

Cool, my car is burning oil now, so I am planning on swapping the engine as soon as she is paid off. Should be around February when I get my taxes back and my raise

. . .
That's all a matter of opinion. Many people argue that it's not better for high speed cornering but other will tell you different. I bought my 4WS instead of a VTEC Lude because I thought it was worth it, it has been.

The only time i notice the difference is when im doing a u-turn...cuts off about 2 feet in turning radius. Other than that you really cant tell.

Other then that YOU can't tell, but others may be able to.

It's a good ice breaker. "Hey check it out, my back wheels turn!"

I don't knoiw the specifics, but I do know that in 3rd gen ludes the rear wheels are mechanically turned, linked to the front, for the first quarter of a turn of your steering wheel they turned the same direction as the front and then they turned back the other direction after you turned more.. From what I understand on ther 4th gen they moved to an electronic control of some sort andI think the turning direction is linked to the cars velocity... I could be wrong though... someone correct me if I am wrong please...

It steers all 4 wheels. The way it works in the 4th gen is that it is electronically controled. At speeds under (roughly) 22 mph, the rear wheels will turn in opposite directions to the front wheels. At speeds higher than 22 mph it will turn the same directions as the front wheels. Don't be too alarm, the rear wheels will only turn to a maximum of about 6 degrees. Doesn't seem like much, but it does help a lot.

At high speeds, it can be a little scary if you are not use to the system (such as changing lanes on the freeway quickly), you can really swing the car out too far, then you'll have to try to catch yourself and swing yourself back.

As far as slower speed turning, its great... taking u-turns are actually cut down.

Hope that helps.

From my 1994 Prelude Brochure

The Prelude electronic 4-wheel steering system gives it exceptional handling and enhanced stability. At low speeds, it steers the rear wheels in the opposite direction of the front wheels. This decreases the Prelude's turning diameter- a feature that can be especially useful when making tight turns or parking in confine spaces.

As speed increases to around 18mph, electronic 4-wheel steering increases the Prelude's agility. In this mode, it allows the Prelude to change direction more quickly in transient maneuvers, such as lane changes on S-curves

Finally, ar highway speeds, electronic 4-wheel steering increases the Prelude's straight-line tracking and stability. 4WS enhances handling and maneuverability by steering the wheels in the same direction as the front wheels
