4th genners with faded rear window moldings, look here
I got tired of my rear window moldings looking like ass. So I picked up some sandpaper (220, 320, and 400 grit) and some black Krylon Fusion Plastic paint (I know, the moldings are rubber). Here is my story:
Eww, look at that:
Prepping took about 20 minutes! Getting the tape around the little edges, especially the curves, was tricky. I used up to 3 layers of tape in some spots. Better safe than sorry:
I sanded the molding down with the 320 grit sandpaper then with the 400 grit. After that I wiped the molding down with some alcohol or something (the bottle was unlabeled, I'm going by smell, lol) and a paper towel to get any rubber shavings off. Looks dull:
Spray paint:
I let the first coat dry for about 15 minutes and applied 3 other light coats within 5 minutes of each other:
I have the car in the garage so it can dry off. I'll post some pics later or tomorrow when its completely dry and without the masking tape and paper.
What do you guys thing? Gonna start peeling / cracking in a few months huh?
Well it looks much better, luckily the rubbers on my 93 are still looking perfect.
The can says the paint bonds to plastic and as most plastics have a certain degree of flexibility to them, it should be ok with the concerns of peeling/cracking etc. Anyway, if they do peel, just spray them again!
I also did this to my windows molding, both quarters and the back glass molding; however, i found a certain problem with it. During the hot season, the sun heats the plastic up and the paint starts to get a bit sticky, when dust and crap gets near, it just sticks to it. It also becomes a pain to clean.
Hopefully that paint does not do that. I used a 3M Trim/Plastic Paint.

Nice! Luckily, my molding isn't that bad as of yet. Therefore, I usually just put some Black Magic on it and let it dry. Thanks for your write-up G_Loc. I'll make sure to keep it in mind for the future.
I have a question about the molding that is attached to the trunk. That strip across the back of the car, under the window (this is the best way I can describe it), but mine is rusting. Honda tells me they can replace it for ~$100. It's so expensive since it's not just rubber, but also attached to a metal piece. Has anyone ever had this piece replaced? Is there an alternative way to fixing this other than taking my car to Honda to have it replaced? All help is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

i know what piece your are talking about. i replaced mine last year. its not very hard to do. get the molding then put it on yourself. i would check with hondaautomotiveparts.com to get a good deal. i am not near my car right now so i can't go look at it. when i get home ill tell you how i did it.
I just replaced my rear wondow trim. I got luck and found one in good condition @ a junk yard. Wasn't as hard to replace as I thought it was going to be.
There are 2 plastic clips @ either end of the strip that you remove, then it just slides out, and the new one will slide on. Took me 10-15 to complete.
I'm think of taking the new one off and spray painting and clear-coating it, just so I don't have to find another 1 in a few years.

Cool. Junkyards here suck. They rarely have any newer cars.
Some crappy "after" pics:
The fixed side:
Ugly side:
Its kinda hard to tell from the pics, but it looks 100 times compared to before. It looks "alright" up close, but from a few feet away, it looks as if it were brand new
