I was in the prelude the other day and was very disapointed in the way the stereo system is arranged such as only 6' speakers all around, my question to all of you is what you have done to compensate for my poor sounding stereo (compared to say the 5th gen) or are you guys happy with your 4th gen setup NOTE" I dont really want subs in my car either.

i have the jdm center speaker, mbquart components all around and the rear 6x9 and i am very happy with the sound...i dont want any subs either but i dont think i need any...car is loud enough and so small that subs only make the car rattle to much unless you dynomat or something like that
The stereo was actually a pretty good system for 1992-1996. I got mine with the factory 6-cd changer. You should see how god-awful some other car's stock stereos were for that time period....But, you're right, by 1995-1996 it was kind of average, so Honda had to one up everybody and come back with the acoustic feedback system for the 5th gens in 97
If half of my speakers weren't blown, I woulda kept them. It sounds pretty good to me...I'm not a huge car audio nut or anything. It sounds a little better with the almost-worthless VTEC subwoofer. Simply dropping some good replacements speakers will make it sound a lot better.
By 6' do you mean 6 inches or the number of speakers? The door speakers are 5 1/4 and the rears are 6 1/2. Not sure about the tweeters.
ya since I dont have the 6x9 in the rear I should get a 8 inch sub in the rear there to give it some better beats, but also I have MB quart/ Kenwood component setup

I updated to better components up front and better tweets. It was a major update but the speaker placement is awful. I just live with it I also run subs so it drones out some of the badness.

If you want something simple and not lose a lot of trunk space in your lude... why not just get a single 8 or 10 inch sub in a sealed enclosed box and mount it against the center console on the back seats. I personally would go with a single 10
Make sure to go with a sealed box though. I've had a bandpass box built for that opening originally, but the bass sounded really muddy.
Any questions, let me know....
I've had 5 different trunks setup in my 4th Gen before, so I'm quite familar with bass response with different kinds of setups. You can view my current setup by clicking on the bottom link:
I got infinity kappas 6 1/2 inch all the way around, just powered off my deck, with a simple 10 inch sub...... Nothing major and it sounds pretty good... the only thing I may do is order some kappa components from my Infinity Rep, and put the tweets up in the dash, for better imaging...
Im also going to be amping the Kappas to get the real perforamnce out of them, mind you they are a warm sounding speaker not a bass giving one.
ive only got boston acoustic components up front, and no speakers in the back. I also have no sub, but I am probably gettig one in a few weeks.
I like the way my current setup sounds, I'm not too much od an audiofile right now (no money.. hehe) but I definately like the sound coming out, now only to get some bass

infinity kappa 6.5 componets (tweeter mounted hear window controls on door (not dash)
infinity kappa 6.5 co axles in the rear
two 10 JL w6's
and it doesn't sound that bad. i plan on putting a nother tweeter in the A pillar (infinity) and some 3.5 infinity kappas in the dash there the stock tweeters are mounted. There alot you can do to the fourth generation to make it sound good.

i guess i just never really heard any good 6.5" speakers...i've heard good 6x9's and i was impressed...so ya, i guess i will get better ones...
what price range do you guys consider really good 6.5" speakers to be in? mine right now, where about 85 usd for a pair...what do really good ones go for?
oh yah, and ken....just curious, why didn't you go for a rear lip with your kit? it would just complete that sick ride of yours!
oh yah, and ken....just curious, why didn't you go for a rear lip with your kit? it would just complete that sick ride of yours!
I decided to skip out of the Wings West rear lip mainly because of the low design stance of my Greddy PE. With the rear lip of WW, the exhaust would hang even lower. Already having a lot of difficulty driving on and off driveways, I used the old trick of painting the rear mud guards to create the lower stance in the rear.
As for the front stage imaging of the 4th gen, while I do agree the imaging is somewhat seperated due to the poor placement of the 6.5 and the tweeter, there are quite a few installs that can be performed to correct it. A few years ago, I met a fellow 4th Gen owner from hondaprelude.com that had a full IASCA SQ (sound quality) competition vehicle. With more then 10 SQ awards behind him, I took a three hour road trip to see if he could also build me a SQ championship ready vehicle.
This what when I learned of the SQ potential that the 4th Gen was capable of.....
He removed the entire dash of his 4th Gen prelude, and custom installed a pair of ADS three way components into the dash. A 6.5 driver is installed in the stock location of the doors, the 5.25 mid range driver is custom installed along with the tweeter into the dash. No sepeartion of the mid bass... poor imaging.... just clean sound
Rear speakers.... a small 4 inch... The reason... most SQ competitors don't believe in rear fill or rear speakers because they solely beleive in front staging. To them, the rear would almost act as a cancelation of the front staging design. Personally... altough I agree that the rear speakers serves less importance in comparison with the front, I think the rears speakers fills out the cabin... so I still have mine. Granted, I do have them 40% lower then the fronts.
As for 6x9s, while there are more bass response from a 6x9 due to the extra cone space in comparison with a 6.5, it's not worth the extra work to install it in a 4th Gen. As I mentioned previously, the rear should only act as a rear fill and not loud enough to dominate the fronts.
The best solution in my opinion in increasing bass response is by adding an 8 or 10 inch sub in the trunk. The bass created from 4, 5.25, 6.5 inch woofers will have its limits.... unless of course you build a complex ported or bandpass enclosure that most of us dont have the adequate skills or engineering knowledge to design and build.
