So I made a trip out to van for a week, and I just got home, from the trip, was 2am and an hour out of my home town, and my engine starts to make a slight grinding noise, and my heart immediately dropped, I knew the engine spun another bearing...
Same thing happened when I bought the car, drove it from van to calgary, and it spun a bearing...
I checked the oil 400 km before and it was ok, but when I checked it just after it spun the bearing, ther was nothing.... There is no leaks , it doesn't blow smoke....
I was cruising at about 82ish mph most of the way home.
Anyways just thought i'd share my disappointing news...
well if the engine is low on oil and those parts bearings aren't getting enough oil, it will just happen, the stupid part is my oil light NEVER came on, and the car felt fine then all of a sudden I heard it...
I was checking my oil most of the way home, but the last time I checked was around 400 km or so ago, it SHOULD have been fine.
Well when I checked the oil 400km ago I topped it off....
I rebuilt this same engine last time, when it spun the bearing before, this time I think ill keep the block for a later project, and buy a new one...
Also I forgot, while in vancouver I had my car parked outside their house, and someone HIT my car, while it was parked, I got lucky cause they left their info but it was some couple on their honeymoon from portland, or... Driving a BMW 7 series...
Ouch dude thats rough .... What else did you do in your rebuild ?? Maybe the crank was out of spec ?
At this point in time, if the heads all good maybe you should consider grabbing a JDM longblock from www.jdmsource.ca ... it's local to us so should save on shipping .. The guy, (Shoaib I think ?) is really great to deal with. I got my jdm headlights from him.
That really sucks about the QP damage as well .. but it looks like you have some rust that needs tending to anyways ... so .. gives you an excuse to fix up the fenders ...
still chiddy to hear about man ... hit me up on aim anytime if you need some elbow grease to help out (andrew4ws)
Well last time I did all the labour with my dad, cept the machine work, its no problem doing any of that, we rebuilt the motor last time, and it ran fine, but it still used stupid amounts of oil.
Everythign was done a complete rebuild, honing , cylc walls, resized crank for oversized bearings, new rod , all new piston heads... New gaskets timing belt, everything was done at the time, it costed a hell of a lot, but I was just happy at the time to get it all complete...
So I believe this time we are just going to take the cheaper and simpler route and just buy a longblock... keep the block i have now, and save it for a turbo project.
As for the rear QP, yea both sides have the rust spots, im not too worried about the hit, im hopping I get decent amount of cash for it, then Ill put that towards my longblock..
Thanks for the link yohan, I was lookin for a canadian dealer.
That's very cool the drivers of the other vehicle left their information .. Be moral about it though, they had guts to leave their info and do the right thing. Most people will overestimate the damages and try to get more, which presuades people to stray away from admitting to hitting a parked car .. Get some estimates (gauranteed) and send them to the couple that hit you and offer them to pay you in a bank draft or other secure funds for the damages and call it a day.
Do you ever go on beyond.ca ?? It's the local forum to us .. meets every wednesday at Chinook parking lot .. 7:30pm in the upper level behind zellers.
Daym that does suck. You mentioned the motor after the rebuild ate up alot of oil? Was the head properly sealed to the block? I had a buddy who rebuilt his E36 M3 motor, and it ate up tons of oil, found out later the head wasn't sealed correctly. And about the damages, that does suck. Good thing they left the info, that was really nice of em. Over here in cali, ur lucky if someone will even think about letting u kno if they saw the accident. Good luck with ur car man.

Yea I have no plans on taking advantage of them at all, the guy on the phone was curtious enough, so I can only show the same respect.
I used to go on beyond and I actually attended meets awhile ago, but nothing much happened at them, so I stopped going for a bit... But I got a new job, and the hours I work kinda prevents me from going, 4-11pm on weds...
All tho I know nick and kevin from school.
The as far as we knew was sealed up completely, the only symptom on the car that was strange was , if you took off oil cap when the engine was running ther was a ton of pressure inside, which only lead us to believe the rings were not sealed...
Either way somehow it was chewing up oil... and it caused me to spin another bearing...
Im probably gonna take the money I get from the hit, and put that towards my engine, and leave the ding for now... and then when I save up for the repaint and rust fixing, just do it all then...
If your going to leave the rust as is, at least sand down the area the paint chipped off, mask and spray the area .. not only will it be one color (sort of) you'll prevent the further spread of the rust and prevent spending more money come time to fix it.
Got the engine at my shop, gonna tear it down tomorrow morning, and pull off pieces I dont' need.
Motor came out of a 92 automatic, looked pretty clean, we saw engine before they washed it down, to see if ther was oil leakage from anywher on the engine, and it looked pretty decent, so hopefully I got a strong motor, that some granny japanese lady drove
As for the current engine, my dad thinks its a lifter or something in the head, that is the problem not a bearing, I assumed it was a bearing, due to the same noise it made last time it happened... We won't know for sure until we pull the motor apart... which should be this weekend. If it was something in the head, thats good news, as I'd like to have a full rotating assembly. The head can be easily fixed, since we were planning to build up a head for turbo As for the block, once I pay off the engine I just bought, ill get some sleeves put into it, and then slowly build it up. Planning for h23/vtec/turbo... Just need to find a crank out of a h23, or accord.
I am planning to buy an H23a vtec from accord wagon next year ... I assume thats $1750 CDN ? .. and I heard something about the blocks of an auto (accord) h22 being less powerful .. is this a possibility?
I'm outta town for the long weekend but love seeing this updated thread, take pics man! .. I'd offer a hand .. well ... more or less beg to be able to help out with an engine tear down and engine work in a prelude ..
good to hear things are working out for you .. and quickly too .. and if its just head work that needs to be done .. awesome.
Im pretty sure the engine out of an accord is a f22b be or f22a..
And they do cost around 3 - 4 grand for a complete changeover, you'd have to call them at jdm source, they had one sitting there, with the blue valve cover...
I don't think they are worth it in the end, but never know..
Yea cost 1650 cdn for the longblock and , the extra hunder is for tax.
this was in an h22? i assume...wow, my h23 spun a rod, and snapped a timing belt 2 different episodes, but my h22 hasnt had any probs in 3 years except the crank pulley did come loose a couple times, but no damage, ive also torn up my timing belt on my h22 but there was never any head damage...vtecs arent as problematic when it comes to the timing belt breaking...theres more clearance to start with than in an h23...to clear the larger cam lobe, or thats what i was told by a honda tech who rebuilds the engines
